2025 Reading Challenge discussion

SPANNING THE YEARS
Duration: 1 July 2018 - 30 September 2018

As our yearly theme is Reading Through Time, this quarter we're going to travel through time as we span the years. With every book you read for this challenge, note the year in which they are set and calculate how many years between that point and the previous point.
If a book takes place over many different years, pick the most important one. You may revisit the same year in different books.
Example:
1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1991)
2. A Tale of Two Cities (1789)
3. A Farewell to Arms (1917)
1991 to 1789 is 202 years, then 1789 to 1917 is another 128, so that totals 330 years. And so on.

I am not sure if i can figure out the time all my books are placed. Especially the fantasy ones could be difficult. I should get at least to 12 books in.

2. 2011 - The Magpies by Mark Edwards 16/07/18- I had to do some guesswork with this one. There is an epilogue which appears to have taken place at least 2 years after the main events of the book ((view spoiler)[enough time for a court case and for a character to meet a man and have a baby with him who is now 6 months old (hide spoiler)]). Assuming the epilogue takes place in the year of publication (2013), 2011 is my best guess for the setting of the bulk of the book
3. 1969 - Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson 20/07/18 - again a guess but as this book is highly autobiographical and the protagonist is 9 (at the start of the book), I went with the year that the author was 9
4. 2009 - The Cartel by Don Winslow 24/07/18- spans 10 year pretty equally so I just went for the middle year.
5. 2016 - The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware 02/08/18
6. 1962 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey 09/08/18
7. 1902 - The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern 12/08/18 - Another tricky one as it spans around 30 years but I chose 1902 as a lot of things happen in this year and this is where the climax of the story happens.

10. 1963 - The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman 31/08/18 - No particular date is mentioned but it's definitely 1960s and the character is looking back on his childhood from (I presume) the year the book was written (2013) so I just went back 50 years.
