Annalise | 5 comments Poop. Guess not

Maybe it only works for images straight off Google Images. Alas, no more Photoshopping joking. Bummer, a whole five minutes, wasted!

Sorry about that. If you want to PM me the link, I can see if I can get it to work.

message 53: by J. (new)

J. (jguenther) | 52 comments This entire workshop is about covers. Perhaps it would make sense to show us all how to include jpegs here. Other cover threads have photos of covers. If they can do it, why can't we?

No one has said you can't post covers, J. No one. Links, no. Covers, yes.

And the instructions on how to post a photo are found under the link that says, "(some html is okay)". I gave the instructions a few comments ago, too.

Murphy makes a lot of sense. The word "cliché" is itself a cliché. I went right to the fantasy cover because it said fantasy.

M.L. | 1129 comments It should work. Take out everything between the quotes and add your own url link info; don't leave double quotes.

Make sure to put the less than sign in front of "img", otherwise, yes. M.L. has it right.

You certainly did! They just don't work for me. What secret handshake did you use?

See next comment below for a method that works.

J. (jguenther) | 52 comments The covers are now in the photos section of the Support for Indie Authors thread. You can upload photos directly from your computer to that area.

I'm taking a stab you mean that you uploaded some covers to your profile and would like them to appear here? If not... well, here they are, anyway.

He added them to the photos section of the group, which I don’t think we want to allow. I’ve removed them.

Thank you! (This leaves unresolved the question of how to post photos to the thread, itself. Dwayne is still the only one to successfully upload a photo to this thread.)

Actually I attempted several days ago to upload the covers to my profile. That also resulted in image error.

message 66: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) J. wrote: "Dwayne is still the only one to successfully upload a photo to this thread"

That's the issue. He's not uploading, but linking an image that is hosted elsewhere. If you're trying to link from an image on your device, it won't work. You need to have it posted somewhere with a valid url. Goodreads does not host images.

message 67: by Christina (last edited Jul 28, 2018 07:31AM) (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) No links means no URLs to an outside source because they may be self-promoting or they may be malicious. Putting a link to a hosted image within the HTML required to show an image is not the same thing as it cannot be accessed by clicking on the picture. However, if you were to add the HTML so as to make the picture clickable to an outside page, it would be against the rules.

Then why has my last comment, along with full instructions on the HTML command, been deleted?

So far, only Dwayne has succeeded in putting an image in a comment on this thread.

The instructions have been posted more than once on this thread, and you had a link in the post.

J. (jguenther) | 52 comments Dwayne wrote: "The instructions have been posted more than once on this thread..."

But the instructions never worked, except for you. Annalise tried more than once. I tried repeatedly and got Image Error each time, except for my last comment, which got removed.

Here's another test image.

The cover workshop has quite a few threads in which people posted pictures of their covers, so it does work for more people than me.

Your test image worked.

Thanks. I'm all set, now that I've discovered by trial and error what the problem was. Onward to post the selected cover and updated text.

Thanks. I'm pretty well committed to doing my own covers from now on, except the Fantasy novel, which will require human figures and a smallish dragon or ten. It's probably going to go active in November, publish in February. Paying for covers just digs a deeper hole to sell my way out of.

message 75: by J. (new)

J. (jguenther) | 52 comments Okay, Cover (A) and (B) are done; onward to the (D) book. It's poetry, "Moon Over the Lost City." The question of the moment: Is the back cover sufficiently legible?

BackCoverMoonOverLostCity

It's been a while since I tried uploading a photo here, so be patient. The Goodreads comment editor sometimes alters links without warning.

I’ve kept it simple to match the front cover, so some items have been omitted, like the website eddress and author bio. The ISBN barcode will go in the lower right, and is approx. 1.5″ high by 2.25″ wide. If there are any features you think the back cover should absolutely have, please let me know. Does the red-on-black look too hard to read? Does the index make you want to find out what some of those cryptic titles mean?

message 76: by Jill (new)

Jill (jillbrock) | 77 comments This is hard to read. Is there a way to get a larger version? I usually don't like like black on red fonts and background. It also depends on the font style. Some are easier to read than others. I also do my on covers, and fonts can be tricky.

message 77: by M.L. (new)

M.L. | 1129 comments At that size, I can't read it at all.

J., people have been asking you to post a larger version of this. Not sure why you posted it so small.

message 81: by M.L. (last edited Oct 01, 2018 08:24PM) (new)

M.L. | 1129 comments Answering the question: Does the index make you want to find out what some of those cryptic titles mean?

Not really. If I picked a book up and looked at the back and saw this extensive index, I might read a couple of the titles, but no, it's not compelling. Maybe a few lines from a poem or two. It's like putting the table of contents on the cover. Doesn't work.

message 82: by Dwayne, Head of Lettuce (new)

Dwayne Fry | 4443 comments Mod
I'm not much for poetry, so I am relating this to the closest thing that does excite me. If I picked up a CD of a band I'd never heard of and all I had for a cover was a black background and a list of titles, I'd put it away. Not finding any of these titles to be cryptic, either.

Thanks much. It looked okay when first posted. Something slipped. I think I know how to fix it next time. It's a 36 Kb image, same as the bigger one.

Right click, select View Image, like most thumbnails. This image is mostly yellow on black, with a minimum ~10 pt serif font. Yes, absolutely, fonts are tricky and some 12 pt fonts are harder to read than other 9 pt fonts. That's why we do proofs. Thanks for the input.

Looked more like a hijacking. I didn't bother reading much of it. Too long and clearly off topic.
