Review: This is the first Morgan Matson book I’ve read, and I’m pleased I finally did get around to reading it! While I was initially going to give it 3 stars, that perfect ending just bumped it back up to 4 stars.
Reasoning behind the 3 stars:
It just got all a bit too much for me. And I don’t even have anxiety normally. This book just stressed me out to the max. Wasn’t feasible/believable to me, just how wrong everything that went wrong could go. I was groaning throughout, annoyed by how messed up everything was getting.
I just loved their interview that was aired on the tv, it was perfect!
And that September chapter right at the end, ended things off perfectly!
I’ll definitely give her other books a shot, but not sure how they’ll go.

I'm going to be listening to this in audiobook format but I'm listening to another audio right now and I want to finish that first before I start on this. Thanks for waiting! But if I take too long, go ahead I'll catch up!

Starting

I just finished the first chapter and I’m already sad that (view spoiler)[ she doesn’t even seem to register Mike as a part of the family anymore. I realize that it seems there was some sort of falling out, but how sad that she doesn’t even count him anymore. Also, I’m so glad she didn’t end up sleeping with Jesse. I was like, no!!!! She’s too young!!! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-4 Done (view spoiler)[This is very entertaining so far! The weekend is turning jnro a disaster 😂 poor Lennie. I like her brothers. And Mike actually made it! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 8 done... (view spoiler)[ it may just be me, but I kind of feel like Charlie is being a bit of a B... I know this was supposed to be her weekend with her siblings, but she’s being super mean to Mike and Brooke. And I thought it was weird when her dad said, he wasn’t sure where he was going to end up but he was sure he’d have a garden. Why didn’t he say where we’d end up?!?! Do you think that’s a foreshadowing of them getting a divorce? I may be reading too much into that though. What do you think Azrah? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[i understand why you feel that way. But to me I find Charlie's situation really relatable. Charlie is from 5 kids and I'm from 6. And like Charlie I have 3 annoying as shit brother, 2 of which are quite a few years older than me. Now the Mike situation is very similar to one of my bothers who I saw last year for the first time since 2010! He was living in South Korea with my sister, but whenever my sister came to visit he'd promise to come and then two days before... He'd cancel. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now this made me seriously pissed off. Not for myself but for my mom. Every holiday she'd get so excited and tell everyone that he was finally coming home! And then he wouldn't. And it made my mom sad as hell. And the worst part is, just like Mike, he makes everything about him when he is in a room. Like legit. So even when he was here I wanted him gone as soon as possible, because he didn't even make an effort with the rest of us (siblings).

Chapter 12 done (view spoiler)[okay wow. I get why Mike is so mad. I would hate it if my mom did that with my life. I hate it when she puts anything about me on facebook, I can't imagine what it would be like on the Grant scale.

I also feel like Charlie has this perfect memory of her family, but that those memories are actually from the comic strip.

I think the Mike situation put a strain on the parents marriage. And did you notice that it's always mentioned that when the mom draws the dad he is always pictured as not paying attention? Hmmm. (hide spoiler)]

I never realized siblings felt that way! I’ve only got one, so I don’t really know what that’s like. It still makes me sad. I always wanted a big family cause I thought then I’d never be alone growing up.

Chapter 11 done: (view spoiler)[ I’d be so mad if I were Linnie!!! All these random people showing up at the house last minute and expecting to stay. I feel like everything that can go wrong is going wrong for her. And honestly I’m not a huge fan of Jesse. I feel like if he liked Charlie he would have at least texted her while he was away. Now it just seems like he wants one thing... at least that’s how it feels to me! I like Bill though, he seems like a nice guy!! (hide spoiler)]

Omg yes, now I (view spoiler)[ totally feel bad for Mike!! How could his mom just put his private stuff up for all to see?!?! He specifically asked her not to and then she did it anyway. And she wouldn’t apologize for it?!?! Who does that?!?!

And yeah, I think Charlie is idealizing her past because the comics were a better memory than real life.

I totally agree with you, I think it’s pressing on their marriage too! I definitely see a divorce here shortly and they’re waiting to tell the kids for the “right time” as if that ever exists. Ahhh!!! Charlie is going to flip out!! She’ll be losing her home and another part of her family!!! How is this going to end happily?! (hide spoiler)]

Just finished chapter 18... (view spoiler)[ can anything else go wrong?!?! And what’s up with this strange little judge man who wants to keep a suit that doesn’t even fit him?!?! Just buy a normal freaking suit and don’t ruin someone’s wedding day!!! I also have a feeling Max has a kitten in the study with him. That’s why Waffles is flipping out, where he got that scratch from, and why Linnie’s allergies are acting up. Once again, who does that?! You don’t just bring rando animals to someone’s house without talking to them, especially when someone is allergic to said animal. Smh... things better start going better!!! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 24 done (view spoiler)[the wedding drama is so entertaining 😂. I'm glad Charlie and Brooke had that moment. I feel really sorry for Brooke and I hate Danny for putting here in the situation where she's uncomfortable. He also treats her like she's temporary.

I loved Bill and Charlie's dance!! For a moment on their drive back he was about to say something to her and then they got interrupted and I WANTED TO SCREAM! 😡

When Mike said to Charlie that she's living in a fantasy - that was so true.

Charlie is now on her way to Jesse's house and I hope something happens where she doesn't actually go. I wish Jesse would just disappear. Everytime she mentions he winks at her, I cringe. (hide spoiler)]

Oh yeah, Mike was harsh but totally correct. I’m a little surprised Charlie denied what her mom did to Mike. But I guess she really is in her own little world.

Hey guys just starting the book! Can't wait to read on to what you guys have already thought so far.

Chapter 5 (view spoiler)[ So far nothing seemed like a "huge" deal just another family reunion and those are always crazy. But then the Australian birthday party happened.... I couldn't help but laugh at the fact all the decorations were sent to the wrong place. (Poor Lennie didn't think she had to worry about anything). (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 15 (view spoiler)[ I officially like Bill more than Jesse. Jesse seems like a player. I thought the dog part was the strange part of the book so far. Who rents a dog, and allows the dog to be sent early when Lennie (who is the bride) is allergic! It seems pretty silly to me. (hide spoiler)]

I still feel bad for Brooke, she hasn't been anything but nice and trying to be helpful, and each time she just isn't given the opportunity to connect with any of Danny's siblings. I’m absolutely livid about the way the mother treated mike and disrespected his wish like that, it wasn’t funny nor cute, he latterly said not to mention things about him in a comic strip and that’s exactly what she did.
I hate Jesse’s relationship with Charlie.
And a little part of me feels like Charlie might be about to go through a lot.

I’m not exactly sure how I should rate this book based on what I’ve got, I’m confused and still feeling emotional about the some things mentioned, I think I won’t rate it for a while
