Angharad | 34 comments I'm looking for the author and title of a book that was published as a complete novel in the July 1980 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine.

The story was set during the Regency era, and featured a young woman who gets caught up in adventures, intrigue, and romance during the Congress of Vienna. I have tried searching for old issues of Good Housekeeping, but most libraries don't have them, and when I've found older issues online, all they show is the cover page (which only tantalizes with "complete novel" but not the important information (author and title). That comes when you get into the magazine, and I can't get inside the magazines online.

Since it was published as a complete novel, I assume it was in print at some time, and perhaps that will make my search easier. Romance/adventure novels set during the Regency era are popular and there are a lot of them, too many to slog through without more info.

Thanks!

Or something by Georgette Heyer perhaps. How did you learn about this book/story?

Letty - Claire Darcy (looks pretty short to be a novel)

Angharad | 34 comments Hi All,

Thanks for your suggestions.

@Tim: I remember that the heroine's name was Letiticia/Letty, so your second suggestion is a possibility.

@Laurie, Kris, and Ann: All that I can remember about the heroine is that she is young, beautiful (aren't they all?), high-spirited. I think she doesn't have any family, but can't be sure. Somehow she winds up travelling across Europe with an debonair, handsome, experienced, older man, who falls in love with her. I think he is quite a bit older than she is, and that they marry at the end. I do remember that it was the Regency era, and I want to say that the time was around the Congress of Vienna (the couple are travelling on the continent), but it has been so long that I could be wrong. I think he has a title, or perhaps he's gentry, and possibly a former military man. I could be wrong about that too.

I'm actually looking for this book for my mother. We both remember reading the story 34 years ago in Good Housekeeping magazine, and since she likes romance novels (short, light, sweet but nothing graphic), and vaguely remembered some of the romances published by Good Housekeeping 30+ years ago, I told her that I would look for it. I'm a good searcher, but even with all of the information on the internet, you need some basic information, like an author and/or title.

This is a wonderful site---I'll check out your suggestions on Amazon and see if any of the descriptions further jog my memory. Thank you very much!

Tim (tjs_books) | 45 comments Well, I only made one suggestion. Here's the Amazon HC description:

When Harry returns to London after three years abroad, he is not only penniless and disgraced, his ungle who controls the family fortune, believes that he had cheated at cards. His Uncle refuses to loan him money for a house. Harry, roaming the streets of London, meets Letty. High-spirited, im[p]ulsive, utterly charming, Letty becomes the Hero[i]n ot the story when Harry and his uncle are able to reconcile their differences.

Daphne | 247 comments Letty for the link. I think this must be it since the cover mentions the Congress of Vienna. Also I can get a partial hit on an old eBay sale for the July 1980 issue and it looks like this book is in there.

Angharad | 34 comments @Tim and @Daphne: thank you for your suggestions. I checked with my local library, and they have a copy!! Hunting for it at the library was so much easier once I had more information, and tomorrow I'll be able to tell if this is the book. I have a very strong feeling that it is, based on what everyone here has written. My mom will be thrilled.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I've moved this to Possibly Solved. Angharad, if you can confirm we've matched the book, we'd appreciate it.
