This thread is open to discuss Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

Synopsis
When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore--free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny. .

Of course! The more the merrier. :-)

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Thanks! I've been meaning to read this for awhile so this will be perfect!

Hi Jess! Welcome!

Laura | 9707 comments Hi guys I forgot to come back! Here now; waiting for my copy.

HI Jess, welcome happy to have you join us.

Geri I was going to read Moon Called next week, but it fulfilled a task for TT challenge. So I finished it yesterday! Interesting beginning! Bran was prominent in this book. I learned a lot more about him. In Alpha and Omega, he is a bit mysterious. I will continue the series.

I’ve tried a few more paranormals in the last week. Too many are so-so. LOL And too many try to be funny but it seems silly to me. I figured out I like dark or at least serious paranormal/urban fantasy. I found a few that I want to try. I did sample First Grave on the Right, Laura. I gave up on it because it’s one of the paranormals that try to be funny. I know! I’m picky! LOL

OK, I’ll be back in September.

Laura | 9707 comments Me too. I thought she tried to make Charley kick ass and funny and it just didn't work. I gave up on that series. No interest to continue.

Moon Called was good but the series just gets better. There is good character development. Mercy is interesting . I love the pack relationships which become more prominent in each book. The tiny overlap with the Omega series is great.

Laura | 9707 comments Everyone ready to start this tomorrow? I actually have a copy this time!

Brooke | 1199 comments I should be good to go! I’ll start it after dinner.

I love the new pic on your profile! Too cute!

Laura | 9707 comments Thanks, Geri! That's my dog Jag. She's 2. After changing my HP avatar I couldn't find my old picture. I'll be ready to start tomorrow too.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I'm ready!!

message 19: by Geri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Geri I read through chapter 9 today. I am enjoying my revisit to Georgina’s world. It’s been a few years since I read this book, but I still remember who our killer is. No worries, my lips are sealed!

I love Georgina’s job. Working in a bookstore would be a fun job for me too. Too bad physical bookstores are disappearing. But I love that Georgina loves books as much as I do. I am also a sucker for a geeky hero. Georgina is a Succubus and not at all shy or virginal, but with Seth, she’s definitely out of her depth. She doesn’t know how to handle his odd behavior and silences. She’s so used to people not being able to resist her. But I can relate to her idolizing a favorite author. I probably wouldn’t be any better if I could meet one of my favorite authors.

What do you think about Georgina reading only 5 pages a day?

Another element I enjoyed about this series was the backstory about Georgina’s past and how she became a Succubus. That gets developed slowly throughout all 6 books. Now that I am rereading, it will be interesting to see how things develop.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I really like her job as well!! I'm sort of jealous that she gets to meet her favorite author. Although, I think it's very well written in that people aren't always who we think they will be like just because we think we know them by the books they write or the movies they're in. She's a bit disappointed that he doesn't meet the standards she had set for him

I would go crazy only reading 5 pages a day! But I guess if you have eternity then there's no rush right? I'm also jealous that she lives forever, only because she could read everything eventually if she read more than 5 pages a day.

I want to know more about her past!! This is the most intriguing thing for me right now. Besides the mystery obviously.

I don’t know how far you are in the book. Did you get to Seth’s email? I won’t say much more in case you haven’t read that. But it really illustrates who Seth is.

Good point about living forever and reading 5 pages a day. I couldn’t do it either. But my to be read list is long!

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Yes I've gotten there. I think the email just confuses her more about him. Actually, I've gotten to the second email as well.

Brooke | 1199 comments I only made it through 5 or 6 chapters last night, but I can tell I am going to like this book! I love her job, but I have no idea how anyone can have enough willpower to only read 5 pages/day.

I’m out on the road all day today in customer meetings, but after dinner I should have time to read some more. Can’t wait!

Laura | 9707 comments I started as well but I didn't get as far as you all. ( happy its a re read so I know what you are talking about)
Yes... I can peek at spoilers now! lol

I would love to work at a book store. Her book store sounds so much bigger ( and cooler/awesome) than mine. Georgina is definitely a people person.

Its kinda cool that as a succubus she can change her appearance. I was thinking... would I want to change mine? I 'd love to be thinner ( working on it... I 'm currently on the 30 day challenge and I walk way more!) but I think at 40 I've accepted who I am and wouldn't change anything. What about you guys?

I couldn't not read just 5 pages a day but I will admit there are a few days I don't read at all. ( life has been hectic!)

Brooke | 1199 comments Oh man, I would love to be able to change my appearance from time to time. Mostly for events or to wear a specific dress, since I have to have everything shortened. But like you, Laura, I have accepted I am the way I am overall. 😊

message 26: by Geri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Geri It’s always great to be healthier. I think it’s great you are challenging yourself, Laura! I try to workout some too. But mostly focus on gentler exercise now like yoga and walking type aerobics. I will never be a size 0. Nor do I want to be anymore.

It would be fun to change my appearance, I have to admit. And Georgina does have fun with this ability throughout the books. Just a little bit of a spoiler, I guess.

Geri Jessi wrote: "Yes I've gotten there. I think the email just confuses her more about him. Actually, I've gotten to the second email as well."

Yeah, he’s wonderful with the written word. But then again he is a writer.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I think i would just like to change my clothing and my hair style. That seems like a lot of fun. Also, she can go invisible. Now that seems really cool and something I've always wished was possible lol

Laura | 9707 comments I think changing my clothing and hair style would be fun too Jess!

What do you all think of Roman?

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I'm suspicious about Roman lol

Brooke | 1199 comments I'm suspicious of Roman too!

message 32: by Geri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Geri I read some more today. Through chapter 18.

I forgot about Doug’s band, Nocturnal Emission. That was just too funny! Georgina’s backstory was sad. And her becoming a Succubus was a bit ironic. I didn’t realize that before. But I like how the author explores some of the pitfalls of being a Succubus. Because on the surface being a Succubus doesn’t seem so bad! LOL

I know the first time I read the book, I didn’t like Roman because he was getting in the way of Georgina and Seth’s relationship.

What do you all think about the mystery? People associated with Georgina are getting hurt. And all this research about nephelim. I already know everything about nephelim because I watch too many fantasy/sci-fi shows and movies. LOL

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Lol Geri I know about Nephelim too from watching the show Supernatural. I was raised in church and the author got the part where church just glosses over that part spot on!

Brooke | 1199 comments I’m intrigued and like the mystery so far. I also like that there is a community of paranormal beings in the area and that they are all friends. I don’t read much paranormal fiction in general, but what I’ve read always has a bit (or a lot) of animosity between the different “species.” The banter between them is fun.

Laura | 9707 comments So, like, Geri, I 've read this one before but I can't remember if (view spoiler)

Seth is a bit of a nerd.. I 'm not sure if I like him yet or not.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I finished last night! Will wait for more of you to finish before talking about it.

Geri Well, I finished. Couldn’t wait any longer. LOL The ending chapters were exciting. I forgot a few things. Like (view spoiler) I still gave this a 5 star rating mostly because I am a sucker for books about writers and books about books. And I really liked how Georgina’s relationship with Seth develops. Georgina and her immortal friends are interesting too. And I thought Mead did a great job in the final chapters. They were suspenseful, heartbreaking but also hopeful. This was a good mix of paranormal mystery and romance!

I’ll check back to see what everyone thought about how the book ends.

I like that too. This book doesn’t take the paranormal aspect too seriously. It’s fun.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I had (view spoiler)

I wish they would make this into a movie with John Cusak playing a demon who is a fan of John Cusak. I think he could pull it off lol

Brooke | 1199 comments Geri wrote: "Brooke wrote: "I’m intrigued and like the mystery so far. I also like that there is a community of paranormal beings in the area and that they are all friends. I don’t read much paranormal fiction ..."

It is fun. And I like that they behave like humans, with jobs, relationships, etc. It makes this series unique in the category, at least in my limited experience.

John Cusak playing Jerome. That’s too funny!

Laura | 9707 comments I had to put this one on hold temporarily while I finished a book for a challenge.
I unexpectedly got to read this morning while waiting for my van switch and then again tonight while waiting for my son.

I 'm up to the part where Seth has taken (view spoiler)

Yeah, both are developing feelings they can’t express for different reasons. I always liked this dynamic between them. A longing that can’t be fulfilled.

Brooke | 1199 comments Picked this back up today after a few days. I had to finish another book for a challenge.

Chapter 21
(view spoiler)

I should be able to finish this before I fall asleep. I'm exhausted, but I have a feeling the last few chapters are going to be crazy.

Laura | 9707 comments Are we all up for book 2?
I'm hoping to finish this tomorrow night.
I thought it would be today but we ended up going to a corn maze this afternoon with family and friends.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments I would enjoy joining you guys again for book 2

Brooke | 1199 comments I’m game for book 2! How about the week after next? (9/24ish)

message 48: by Geri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Geri I’m definitely in for book 2. 9-24 works for me.

That sounds like fun! My husband and I tried to go to an apple orchard yesterday. We got there about 9:30 am and it was packed already. So we decided to skip it and go another day. I remember when it was a family owned orchard and we could go anytime we wanted. Now, it’s owned by a company and a lot of people from neighboring states visit in droves. Good for the orchard, not so good for me!

Laura | 9707 comments It was fun. We got lost a few times!
Going to an apple orchard is also fun! It's too bad it's so commercialized now.
9/24 also works for me
