Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 2457 comments Hi, teammates .... I haven't played in years, but am willing to try it again.

Do NOT want to be team captain.

Reading a book right now about the Grand Canyon and the chapter I'm on is about running the Colorado ... how fast and dangerous it is.

Anyway ... how about this for a team name: River Run Readers

message 6: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 2457 comments Oh ... another team name idea: Reading FOUR the Win

message 7: by Brenna (new)

Brenna (cinderheart218) | 82 comments Hey everyone! I played a round or two the last time the Super Series ran, and I have more time now so I'm excited to do some reading! However, I am in college right now so I probably shouldn't be team captain, I don't know when I may be busy and not have much time to spend online.

For team name, what about something along the lines of The Fab Four or Fantastic Four? I do like Reading Four the Win for a reading themed name though

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 2365 comments Hi, everyone! I played the last couple times and loved it. I was captain last time and wouldn't mind doing it again if no one else wants a turn. I love Reading Four The Win! I'm awful with coming up with good team names...

I also like Reading FOUR the Win as a team name. Thanks for volunteering to captain, Karen! :-)

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 2365 comments Looks like everyone on our team has checked in.

So I think we need to decide on our name. So far these are the suggestions:

River Run Readers
Reading FOUR the Win
Fab Four
Fantastic Four

If there are no other suggestions, can everyone vote for their favorite?

So turns out the mod wasn't paying attention when writing up the bonus point requirements, so here's an update to the starting and finishing a series bonus. What it was meant to say is:

✸ One point can be earned for starting and finishing a series. There must be at least 4 books in that series. Series + spin-off totalling ≥4 books also counts. For series with >9 books, point will be awarded for reading books 1-9.

How It Qualifies: #9 in the series

Rating: 4 stars
Review: This finishes up the series (finally!) I really enjoyed the wrap up and finally seeing the MCs HEA! Throughout the series, they had so many obstacles that I thought it might never happen. Jonathan was such a dominant alpha and in the beginning wouldn't give an inch. But as all their secrets came out, he gradually mellowed a bit and realized how much Monica meant to him.

Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon
Qualification: Title begins 'T'
Date Finished: 19Sep18
Rating: 3***
Review: This is a mystery, a coming-of-age story, a social commentary, and an historical fiction work all in one. The setting is a particular street in a London neighborhood in the summer of 1976. The mystery begins when Mrs Creasy goes missing. The adults quickly suspect the "loner" in the neighborhood because of past events. But 10-year-old Grace and her friend Tilly decide that if they can find God, they'll find Mrs Creasy, so they begin carefully investigating, going house to house inquiring of the neighbors. As they do so, each neighbor reflects on what happened nine years previously, and their individual guilt and complicity slowly is revealed.

What an interesting and engaging story! It's a different construct from the typical mystery. I love the focus on the young girls, whose innocence is in sharp contrast with the guilty secrets of the adults. This is the author's debut novel. I look forward to reading more works by her.

Author: Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas
How it Qualifies: Begins with a T
Date Finished: 9/20
Rating: ★★★★★
Review:
I originally found this book from Maas's other series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and I'm so glad I decided to try this series as well! I loved this book, each of the characters had so much depth, even the ones who didn't seem important at first, and it was cool to watch all of them develop together. Specifically the relationships between Celaena, Dorian, and Chaol were developed much more than I was expecting the way they all bantered was fun to read. It was also interesting how Kaltain happened to have much more to her than first met the eye. The plot stayed exciting the whole time too, what began as just Celaena simply being taken to a competition turns into something so much more exciting and interesting as she tries to save the other competitors and herself from a gruesome death.

Overall, I think I enjoyed this book even more than Maas's other series; there was so much action, so many twists and turns I wasn't expecting, and plenty of mystery involved as well, that I think I'll definitely read the rest of the series in the future.

Victorian Vickie (vhartwell) Week 1- spot 9

Book:Tricks
Author: Ellen Hopkins
Date Read: 9-21-18
How it fits: the title starts with T
Rating: 4 Starts
Review: Ellen Hopkins is one of those authors who just grips at your soul as she tackles teen issues. As you read about each of these 5 different teens, your heart just breaks for them. Due to the topics, they maybe hard to read for some people but she is one author I always recommend to my HS students.

Book: Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero
Author: Michael Hingson
How it fits: Starts with a T
Date Read: 18 September 2018
Rating: ****
Review: This book was a really interesting insight both into the events of 9/11 (which I know very little about) and into life for blind people. Lately, I've become quite interested about how people with various limitations live life, especially because I'm noticing that here in my country, they lead pretty miserable lives with little to no any hope for their futures.

It was good to read the story of someone who lives a great life despite having a limitation, and it got me thinking - if someone born before the age of the Internet was able to accomplish so much, then it must be so much more easier to accomplish way more, with our modern technology.

Reading about the events of 9/11 from someone who lived through them was pretty intriguing too. Michael's description makes you feel as if you were right there with him, and I kept wondering - if this was the experience described by someone who cannot see, what would it be to read the experience of someone who could? I'm definitely going to try and read more about this tragic incident again soon.

How's the reading going? I'm (obviously, since I posted the review already!) done with my book and already have lined up two options for the next one, a #1 or #2 in a series :)

Do you guys primarily read on apps or buy or borrow the physical copies?

Review
Deep under the oceans something awakens. A ball of yarn that is is a nervous system. In labs, scientists disappear as victims of their own experiments. The voice of the Great Old Ones mock humanity, driving some to madness.

There are 31 short stories in this collection. I have read Lovecraft for years and it was refreshing to read new (to me) authors telling tales in the mythos. I bought this book on a whim and I am glad that it is now in my collection.

Uhm... you're probably going to hate me for saying this, but a short story collection counts as an anthology and there's this rule for using anthologies:
✸When using an anthology you may use any of the numbers in the book except for the .5 since this means ½. But you must review each story in the anthology.

message 43: by M (new)

M Beal | 143 comments I dis-agree but I will have all 31 reviews up as soon as i can

Perhaps I should amend that to "counts as an anthology for the purposes of this challenge". I'm going with Ezi's ruling from an earlier round on this. That case specifically concerned short story magazines, but I would apply the same principle here.
This was her take on it.

Heart of Venom by Jennifer Estep (Elemental Assassins #9)
Date Read: 9/18
Rating: ★★★★

Gin and her friends are attacked as they are enjoying a spa trip and Sophia is kidnapped by Harley Grimes while Jo-Jo is seriously injured. Gin plans to rescue Sophia and Owen offers to help. I liked the background information provided on Gin and Sophia's pasts, including when Sophia was held by Grimes years before and Fletcher rescued her. Gin is very protective of those she considers her family, which made this installment more emotional than previous books. There is plenty of action as Gin brings her usual destruction. I will definitely continue with this series and look forward to reading the next one.

Brenna (cinderheart218) | 82 comments It really depends for me, I'll usually read it wherever my library has it available, in print or on Overdrive, but I usually end up reading the Overdrive ones on my phone. Its nice to have them for the bus rides I have into my college campus.

I also just wanted to let you guys know that I will probably be submitting my reviews pretty close to 8 p.m. central time on thurdays, I usually don't get back home until around 6 or 7, but I will be done reading before the deadline, I'm making pretty good progress :)
