Did others notice that the Celie timeline and the Nettie timeline don't line up together? Do you think Walker did this by accident or on purpose? And if on purpose what do you suppose her point was?
I don't remember noticing that... how obvious is the discrepancy?
Well the biggest one is that Nettie mentions seeing the mayor's wife's maid (that can only be Sophia) before leaving for Africa - but that couldn't have happened until at least 17 years after Celie's marriage. And then the ages of Olivia and Adam and the time elapsed since Nettie's marriage don't quite line up.

Yes! I was very confused over this as well, though I chalked it up to me missing some crucial information somewhere. I can't find anything about it online either. Interesting...

I did notice the continuity problems, which is one of the reasons I couldn't quite embrace The Color Purple. I do love In Our Mother's Gardens though, and all the shorts by Alice Walker I've encountered.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
