Ah, you had a doppelganger account! I cleaned that up. There is less of you "Jason M's" now.

If the genre S&S was not officially titled until 1961 by Leiber and Moorcock (who had been writing it till then), yet he who they credit as the Father thereof (namely Robert E. Howard) was writing it (without overlapping these two yet alongside others credited with influencing the shape of the genre) during the 1920s-30s (whilst under the influence of those acknowledged as his writing inspirations and mentors), when exactly is considered the birthday of S&S? Contemplating all the above, it seems to have been a labor worthy of Guinness Book.

I think Howard could pretty much be called the father of the genre all by his lonesome. But, I do like the way Jason decided to split up the sections into Pre-Howard, Howard's Peers, and Post-Howard.

Why exactly are these two authors Fritz Leiber and Michael Moorcock commonly lumped together with Robert E. Howard as the creator-fathers of S&S? Simply because they named the genre?

TV tropes has an interesting take on what they call the trope maker and the trope codifier. In this instance, I think, Leiber and Moorcock would fall under codifiers, but be viewed as makers, because Howard had so many imitators that are not looked at as having been successful. I think Leiber and Moorcock were different enough, and popular enough, from Howard that they were not judged in the same harsh manner as the Conan clones and pastiches.

Thanks, A.R.! And wonderful question I do not have an answer to! I truly do wish to do another nf title. This was exploratory discussion, and I am very interested in doing this title, but there is no timeline as of yet. If I go the route I'm thinking, I have to learn how to -- and then accomplish -- soliciting permission from estates and such.

I agree on the idea that REH could be the father 'all by his lonesome.' I do actually have no qualm including Leiber as co-parent since he much more directly and in much closer conjunction was writing it and fleshing it out. I take nothing away from the expansion Moorcock brought, but he brought it 20 years later and then another 5 or so years later asked, 'Hey, what do we call this stuff we're writing?' Never struck me as being very parental and all :)
On Facebook he is fielding requests on the scope of that.
