message 49: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments My kids are having some trouble with Week 2. My youngest because in each row there is a square that isn't suited for him. He is too young for YA, much less adult books, and I don't think it's a good idea to make him read outside his comfort zone or attempt a book of over 400 pages! So I made him a deal: If he could get five squares, he has Junior Bingo. They don't have to be in a row.

He succeeded with Sky the Unwanted Kitten (Holly Webb Animal Stories) by Holly Webb and Dog Man A Tale of Two Kitties (Dog Man, #3) by Dav Pilkey
Sky the Unwanted Kitten has sky on the cover (actually "double sky" as he put it. On the cover art and in the title!), the main character travels (moves to another town), Dog Man has a Male Protagonist, is From the Library, and Published in the Last 5 Years, and both books have Nonhuman Characters. That's 6 squares. (Junior) Bingo!

My elder child has a different problem. She is reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot for her school's Accelerated Reader program, and Northern Lights (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman for the library book club she attends. She's not likely to finish either of those before the readathon, and certainly not both! She also doesn't have the leisure to quickly read a bunch of other books for bingo. So I told her she can have the bingo for this week since she has been steadily reading all week. Last row vertical: Northern Lights has her HP House Colour, the MC travels, and it is an award winning bestseller. The Mill on the Floss is a Classic, and she's been reading outdoors for a while every day after school. (In addition this covers Book from the Library, Book Outside her Comfort Zone, Non-human Characters, Movie Adaptation, YA, Adult, and is two pages off being Book over 400 pages.) So let's give her a bingo, what?
