Charlie Ravioli (charlie_ravioli) | 611 comments I watched the fourth episode of the Great American Read this weekend. It was titled "Heroes". It focused on some good ones, some that were just ok, but missed some of my favorites that I think warrant honorable mention, such as: Jo March (Little Women), Dagny Taggart (Atlas Shrugged), Hermione Granger (Harry Potter Series), Wade Watts (Ready Player One), Gus McCrae (Lonesome Dove) and Buck (Call of the Wild). I'd be remiss without also mentioning the one book and hero I still shake my head at that is missing from the list altogether: The Old Man and the Sea and Santiago. Who are your favorite book character heroes (and no need to limit your answer to only those books on the GAR top 100)?

annapi | 5505 comments Taran (Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander)
Hazel (Watership Down by Richard Adams)
Torin Kerr (Confederation series by Tanya Huff)
Eve Dallas and Roarke (In Death series by Nora Roberts)
Kerowyn and Tarma (Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey)
Paksenarrion (Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon)
Sister Frevisse (Sister Frevisse series by Margaret Frazer)
Brother Cadfael (Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters)
Harry Bosch (Bosch series by Michael Connelly)
Harry Dresden (Dresden files by Jim Butcher)

Goodness, too many more to remember right now, that is just off the top of my head! These are the series I keep going back to and enjoying each time I revisit.

But I do have to mention the latest addition to the list:
Miles Naismith Vorkosigan (Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold).

I have just binge-read 14 books of the series, and still have 7 more to go, and I don't feel like stopping! I have to give kudos to Bujold for keeping my attention for so long, and I will have to see now if I can get through the whole series in one go - something I've never done before at the first pass. LOL it feels like binge-watching a TV show on Netflix.

Amy | 12933 comments I second that! I was racking my brain and he’s the obvious one. What an interesting question. I’m still thinking about it. And especially thinking about female heroes.

Amy N. | 256 comments For some reason I immediately thought of Dominic by William Steig. Not one of his better known ones, which is a shame. That book had a profound impact on me as a child.

Dominic the dog is the main character and he spends most of the book helping people, giving away his wealth, and just enjoying the simplicities of life with a depth and a strength and a purity I held onto with my whole soul as a child because I knew it was going to leech away from me as I got older. It's a beautifully written book, too, and I am surprised I thought of it so quickly, because I haven't thought of it in years, but the second I did it all came flooding back to me. It's one of those books I was scared to reread because it couldn't possibly hold up as an adult, but reading some of the reviews just now made me reconsider. It sounds like it is just as profound and beautiful as I remember. And Dominic is a hero I would put right up there with Horton and Samwise Gamgee.

Susie Neville Longbottom is definitely an unsung hero.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh, I loved Dominic too. I'm going to try to find a copy to reread, because I don't remember it, I just remember the cover and warm feelings it evokes.
