Hello all!

This is the synergistic convergence of both a scheduled buddy read and the selection for the October Inclusive Book Bingo challenge (trans author/character)!

Of course, you do not need to be playing IBB to join in.

Please tag all spoilers and include the chapter number so we can discuss this book together!

Gabi | 3441 comments I'll be lurking a bit here, to see what folks think. Cause I'm not sure If I pick it up (read superhero and heard YA, which both isn't my cup of tea)

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments I'm 14 chapters in and having a blast. Superhero narratives seem like they're always about wish fulfillment, and to filter that drive through transgender longing and identity seems like an ideal fit. I'm loving Danny as a narrator and protagonist; she's thoughtful and sharp and willing to rethink and correct her analysis of a situation even in mid-paragraph. And while, yes, there some of the angst we associate with YA, in Danny's case, I actually feel like she deserves to express way more angst than she is in fact expressing.

Bobby | 869 comments Ummmm so I kind of read 90% of this book last night (and this morning) and ended up staying up way too late, but just couldn't power through the last bit. I had been wanting to read it for a while, and have had the physical copy from the library staring at me for the last couple weeks.

I was trying to pace myself for the buddy read here, but it's a short book, I love superhero fiction, and the transgender element brought something different that I hadn't read about in a main character before. Those things combined meant that I couldn't put it down.

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments Bobby wrote: "Ummmm so I kind of read 90% of this book last night (and this morning) and ended up staying up way too late..."

LOL. I fully understand the impulse. This book definitely grabs hold! I'm trying to think back on my reading, and I'm pretty sure this is the first superhero fiction I've ever read. Superhero comics and superhero films, sure, but never before superhero fiction.

My only real comparison so far will be Strong Female Protagonist. Book One which I read as webcomics. It's pretty strong on the social discussions, so I'll be curious how this compares! It should be in this week for me :)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments I'll have to start in on the audio for this once I finish my current listen. Hopefully by then end of the week, if not sooner.

Ariana | 659 comments Started yesterday. I'm not as speedy as others, but I agree that it's a lot of fun. I also was a little worried about the YA-ness might bug me, but it hasn't felt annoying at all. Excited to read more!

Bobby | 869 comments I finished and loved it, but before I discuss, I'll go into some content warnings. There won't be spoilers of the story or anything, but I will put it in tags in case people don't want any kind of spoiler. (view spoiler).

Despite my intentions to do like a normal buddy read and post my thoughts as I go, I ended up reading most of it Sunday night/Monday morning, and the rest of it last night. So I'll just post some final thoughts in spoiler tags now, and then discuss with others as they read it.

Spoilers for the entire book ahead. (view spoiler)

I can't wait to hear what you think.

Really looking forward to hearing what others think about this one, and I plan to read #2 as soon as it comes in at the library.

message 14: by Trike (new)

Trike I just realized this is Dreadnought not Dreadnought.

Bobby | 869 comments Travis, I'm so glad you liked this book, and your foray into superhero fiction. I'll respond to your spoilers in tags below.

(view spoiler)

In case anyone is interested in reading more fiction about people with super powers, the most famous example I can think of is The Reckoners trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. The first book is Steelheart. The kindle version of the whole trilogy is currently on sale from Amazon U.S. for $1.99 each.

I have a list of superhero books I’ve read: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I don’t read novelizations of comic book characters like the ones from Marvel and DC, as I prefer original creations.

Gabi | 3441 comments How superhero is this superhero novel? Those who've already finished it, would you say it is for somebody who doesn't like superhero stories? (Not in comics, not in movies, not in novels)

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments Gabi wrote: "How superhero is this superhero novel? Those who've already finished it, would you say it is for somebody who doesn't like superhero stories? (Not in comics, not in movies, not in novels)"

It's pretty dang superhero, but also there's a ton of other stuff happening as well. I'm not someone who gravitates toward superhero narratives, and I enjoyed this novel tremendously.

message 21: by Kaa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kaa | 1542 comments I'm up to chapter 7 and enjoying it a lot. I don't read a ton of superhero fiction, either comics or novels, but so far this is really working for me.

Gabi | 3441 comments Thanks Travis and Kaa. I just decided to use my audible credit for it (although the narrator takes some getting used to).

Kaa | 1542 comments I'm on Ch 22 now. I agree with Bobby and Travis that this book is hard to put down. I keep sitting down to read "just one more chapter" and going through five or six instead.

@Gabi: There's been a little of the kind of superhero stuff I don't enjoy, but overall the story is still very character-focused, and Danny is a great character. I do hope you enjoy it!

Kaa | 1542 comments Just finished, and I really liked it. I'll be reading the second book as soon as I can get it from the library. Y'all want to do a buddy read for that one too?

@Allison: I haven't read Strong Female Protagonist, but I felt that this book did a great job on social discussions, so I hope you continue to enjoy it.

Another series with queer teen superheros that I enjoyed is Not Your Sidekick, for anyone looking for more like this - the protagonist of the second book is trans.

Rachel | 1403 comments I haven’t read the book but read a fascinating negative review which maybe I’ll put over to mess up your discussion?? 😁

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments I'm in the last 25% of this, I think...

It's been very slow going for me. Partially because my usual reading time has been curtailed lately, but partially because it's just not grabbing me as a "must finish reading" kind of thing.

Which isn't to say I'm not enjoying it, because I am, but I'm just not blown away by it.

I have enjoyed the character development and the dealing with family and social issues. Those have been the strongest parts of the book - but I also feel like they're sort of repetitive. Which, ya know, life would be... but there's a part of me that just wants to get to the story... which is weird because I'm usually more a character-focused reader...

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments Rachel wrote: "I haven’t read the book but read a fascinating negative review which maybe I’ll put over to mess up your discussion?? 😁"

Please do!

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments So, I was just reading a 2-star review that might hit on why I'm not gelling with this story even though it's character-oriented and I normally go for that kind of stories -

That is to say (view spoiler)

So, yeah... I think that's my issue right now, and the fact that the "superhero" part of the story is kind of weak at this point.

message 37: by Gabi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Gabi | 3441 comments I'm chapter 17 now. And although the book is nice, I catch myself ever so often spacing out while listening. I put this down to me not liking superhero stories in general.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments Gabi wrote: "Question for chapter 18: [spoilers removed]"

Related more to your zoning out...

I also zoned out, while reading, and I started skimming the more actiony bits. They just didn't hold my attention... so I wonder how much is the narrator and how much is the writing style.

message 43: by Gabi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Gabi | 3441 comments Chapter 24: (view spoiler)

@Colleen: oh, the correct phrase is "zoning out". Thanks a lot, I try to remember that. Yup, and I'm the same with the action scenes, but I feel a bit bad about that, cause after all this is a superhero book, so of course there have to be superhero scenes.

message 44: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allison Hurd | 14225 comments Mod
It's my understanding that most beloved superhero stories are not so much about action and saving the world as contemplating power, ethics, and humanity. So it's cool if you space out on the fighty bits IMO ;-)

(Also, I'd like to plug Strong Female Protagonist Book 1 at least. It sort of goes off the rails at a certain point but my goodness the ideas initially are really powerful. And all the action bits are either really cathartic so you're cheering along or are made to feel viscerally uncomfortable.)

Bobby | 869 comments I loved the action bits, but I've already mentioned that I'm a big fan of superhero novels, and fight scenes are a big reason. On the other hand if it's not your thing, I can see why someone might not be as interested in those parts.

It kind of is my thing... but I also find action scenes to be, in general, not very well written. Not just this book, just, in general...

Ariana | 659 comments I finished this today, and over all I liked it a lot. I would totally recommend it. My enthusiasm did cool a teeny bit in the last quarter of the book for a few reasons.

But I still found it compelling and fun to read! I could definitely see reading the sequel soon, but I need to take a break first. Too much YA makes me grumpy.
