It is October and this is the buddy read of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon

Let the discussion begin.

Terris | 4388 comments I had to start a little bit early because I have other long reads to get to this month, so I'm about half way through, and I am loving it!! I think this is the book I've been waiting for!

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments I regret that I have to back out of this due to trying to complete various challenges. I will read this next year and look forward to reviewing this thread.

Terris | 4388 comments We'll miss you, Sue. But you definitely need to keep this one on your list!!

George P. | 422 comments This novel won the Pulitzer Prize, and was listed in the 2008 edition of "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die". It's rare for a novel to get both honors, however it was dropped from the following edition of "1001 books...". Also it's listed in "The Guardian 1000" novels list; I think it was voted at #65 in the Goodreads poll of that list.
I've read close to 30% of it, then I've paused for a week or 2 waiting for the buddy read to start before continuing. It seems to have a mix of the humorous and weird (e.g., a golem) with the dark background of the holocaust in Europe, so it hits several interesting genres and themes. So far I've seen no romance elements but likely later?
Clearly Mr. Chabon knows a great deal about the early days of comic books in the U,S., and that's interesting to me, having been a fan of the DC (Superman, Batman, The Flash) and Marvel comics of the 1960s when I was young. Now that we're underway here, I'm eager to continue.

Terris | 4388 comments I'm about 75% through this and am enjoying it, BUT it's starting to get a little long and I kind of feel like the story is wandering a little bit. I will definitely keep going because I think everything will come back together in the end. But I don't know if this book needed to be 650 pages long. (?)

George P. | 422 comments I've just hit the halfway point- it IS a lengthy novel. I've figured to schedule 3% of the book per day and I will finish on Oct 24th. That way I don't think I'll get tired of reading it. I'm interested to see what happens to the characters, (will Joe's brother make it out of Europe?) and I think the descriptions of the characters and the action is well-written.

Terris | 4388 comments I finished! And I'll say this because I don't think it has any spoilers:

I enjoyed this story of cousins, Joe and Sammy, and their growing from childhood to adulthood in the comic book era.
I liked the writing and the story and each of the characters. However, it was a little slow-paced and perhaps longer than it needed to be (IMO). Other than that, I am glad I finally read this one that had been on my list for a long time! I'm glad that we got to read it together! :)

George P. | 422 comments I'm only now 70% through, but like most long books, it seems to me it would have been improved with editing down by about 25%. It is an entertaining book though. I think I'll wait til I've finished to discourse on what I liked most about it.

Darren (dazburns) | 2154 comments I'm rattling along nicely with this now - at 17% - enjoyable so far, but only just getting going really - seems quite easy to pick up anytime and read another 30-40 pages, so should finish this month...

Nice to have you join in Darren. I'm making slow steady progress and now 85% through it. These folks do seem to have very eventful lives- reminds me a little of Ragtime and Like Water for Elephants in that way.

yeah I'm struggling with this :o(
just amiable, rambling, mildly entertaining - nothing to get excited about
I will finish it, but disappointed...

George P. | 422 comments I finished Amazing Adventures today. Although it has some serious elements, overall it's lighter than the novels I usually read. I did enjoy it though. One of the most interesting parts was the examination of what it was like to be gay in the 1040s and 50s. I plan to read Carol by Patricia Highsmith one of these days which also takes up this situation.
I'm being a little generous in rating it 4 stars I think. I see Terris also rated 4 stars.
