I’d vote for it too!

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I seem to be the opposite of most people this week, I had six downs and two ups. I’m glad for the change to the rules - it was the perfect week for me to use them. A lot of them were repeat prompts for me which I didn’t enjoy the first time around (occupational hazard of doing so many challenges I guess), but I’m also feeling a bit of prompt-fatigue and nothing’s really standing out for me.

I hope so too, Sophie.

I just checked it out. There are now 148 books on it from 55 voters from the group. Aside from the 3 I suggested, I didn’t know about a single other book. I now have 14 of them on my tbr list....

Perhaps if people who haven’t added their suggestions yet did so, there would be even more books and it might make it more likely that it got voted in.

Here’s the list again

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments Can you specify the rules of this list? What books qualify? Then I can go add some before the list gets possibly suggested.

Perhaps whoever is in charge of the list can edit the description to explain what qualifies too. Right now it just says "List created by Around the Year in 52 Books group members including their favourite lesser known book recommendations"

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments This list was voted on in the fifth poll so if you go back to read the fifth poll suggestions there should be some discussion about it. I hope!

What I remember:
The group did not want to set strict rules about which books might qualify (so far as the rating you gave the book and the max number of GR ratings the book has)
I can't remember if this was fiction only?
Each member could add up to three books to the list.
I THINK we agreed to not add books just published in 2018, since of course many of them would not have a lot of ratings yet.

Yea, we had said they should be at least a year old and have "not a lot" of reviews... which is open to interpretation, but you should look at the lesser known books on your shelves.

I went through my 5 and 4 starred books and found the ones that had the least amount of rankings and added them! 3 per person!

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Oops I added more than three to the list but I think I've managed to undo the extras. I would want more on the list before I'd consider voting for it. There are quite a few I've already pruned from my TBR and I don't want to buy again (unless they are still in local charity shop circulation!).

message 59: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I have more than 3 books on the ATY list but I'm pretty sure the "extras" are because I gave a second vote to a book someone else had added.

I really hope the ATY list comes back around for a vote. I think it would help to create a sense of community and could be a good prompt for discussion.

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments For me it was never clear how many rating could the books have. I remember I added one with not so many rating, but much more than the rest I saw there. How many ratings should the books have?

I think the 3 that I added were all under 10,000 ratings but after discussion, we didn't want to be too limiting. Personally, I'd say under 20-25,000 constitutes lesser known and should be good for the list.

Silvia, when I first suggested the prompt, I envisioned putting some of my favourite books that I rarely saw people discuss on goodreads. We all have books that we think are exceptional and people tend to know about them because they are discussed often in the popular press and have many ratings (e.g., To Kill a Mockingbird). However, what I had hoped for this list was that people would put books they thought “were that good” but that somehow were missed by the general public. So the number of ratings doesn’t really matter unless there are so many ratings that most of us would already know about the book. By limiting it to 3 or only a few books per person, it forces people to put their top choices and not every book they rate highly. In other words, they should put their “gems”. Does this help?

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments It does. Thanks, Sophie :)

Well described Sophie. I have been a fan of this idea since you first brought it up and I am still rooting for it! I will be doing it for my rejects challenge regardless but it would be nice to have it on the main list because I think the discussion could be really good.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments In the lesser known list, I find it really useful when people add a short comment to explain why they added the book, maybe we could add a reminder in the list description?

Done. Let me know, Sophie, if I should word it differently.

message 68: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I loved the lesser known list. I need to go back in and add some blurbs on why I chose my books ( I think I cheated a little and put in 4) I was surprised at how few ratings there were for some of the books I loved that I put on the list. That one will go on my reject list for sure if it isn't voted back in.

message 69: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments I like the change as well. I ended up with 5 up and 1 down. I am good with the rest either way the voting turns out.

I’m nervous that tomorrow we are going to get a “surprise! 8 prompts won and we are done with the polls!” 😂😂

In order to ease some anxiety, we will not be having 8 winners tomorrow :)

Unless of course, about 30 people vote in the next ten hours...
