Jan - The start date on A Red Herring Without Mustard seems to have disappeared.

Danielle - Single White Incubus is also missing its start date.

Please add them in when you get a chance this week. Thanks so much!

How was Kings of the Wyld?
Maybe I will try to read it during Week 5 or 6 if the opportunity arises 🙂

message 908: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments It was good! It wasn’t exactly my kind of book so it was a little hard to sit and read for like 4 hours straight, but it was actually really funny. It kind of reminded me of The Riyria books. It was worth the read!

message 909: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 Deanna - I added a start date but am not sure if the book edition changed. Im also not positive my Anansi Boys edition is correct. I'm not sure what time I can get on my computer tomorrow but I'll check both and fix them soon, if needed.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments We got our word for next week: TINSEL
(anf for word-as-genre we can also use FESTIVE).

TINSEL only has 1 difficult letter, to Sally’s 2 in a word of the same length (RIBBON), which probably knocks us well out of the running for a win in that category. (Unless we get a miracle spin in Week 6) 🙁

Also: Happy Thanksgiving!

Details on spreadsheet.

I will finish my other book for this week. It’s an anthology, and there were a few stories that I specifically skipped over because I wanted to listen to the audio, but my library hold didn’t come in time so I’ve had to go back and read them after all. In total, I only have about 100 pages left. 🙂

If your long book has anything that will work for TINSEL, maybe you should switch books now. You can always pick the long book up again to finish early in Round Five...

message 939: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments For the final round (Week Six), depending what word we get, I think it would make sense to pick a whole-team strategy to try to win either A) Traditional (total # of points), by reading long books for max value, or B) Difficult Letter, by reading more books but shorter.
So far we have been reading a big mix, and we have been consistently in or around like 3rd place in both at the end of each round. So at the end of Round Five, in one week, we may need to just choose one category to go for the win...

message 940: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments Good idea Alysa! Hopefully we get lucky and get a short word with a few difficult letters, and all just read a ton of short books.

message 941: by Alysa (last edited Nov 24, 2018 10:44AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Without accounting for “tinsel” being removed from our possible Round Six words, If my findings are correct, we have:

Just over 50% chance of getting a word with 0 or 1 difficult letters.
Just under 50% chance of getting a word with 2 or 3 difficult letters.
A 1 in 6 chance of getting a word with 3 difficult letters.
A 1 in 12 chance of getting a shortish word with 3 difficult letters (cookies; goodwill). Those are the jackpot!

Note: nearly all the Difficult Letters will be O’s and I’s.
(There are only two words with a U, one word with a Y, and zero with a Z).

All we can do is hope! (And save up our O and I books!)
If we get a long word, or a word with 0 or only 1 difficult letter... we’ll see what words other teams have and what their rankings are before we decide. If we go for “Total # of points” category, we would pretty much need full team buy-in though, and that probably won’t happen depending on what different people actually enjoy reading. 🧐

We also have a shot at the BOM category, but it’s more difficult to predict how many people are into Xmas books enough to track the book down and participate. It looks like most teams have at least 1 person already (including us — yay Deanna!)

message 942: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Anyone heard from Brittany? She has 3 claimed books worth 140 points for this week (plus possible BOM points) and hasn’t checked in in a while.
