The planning sheet has been updated with Goodwill for next week.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I can finish my final two books...
BUT: If it makes more strategic sense to finish Stranger Things Happen next week, I can set it aside and finish it later. I've read about 2/3 of it. (It has TINSEL word-in-text but we no longer care about that!)

It works for letters S & L this week, but we need a lot of L's for next week. Deanna, just let me know sometime tomorrow morning.

message 1053: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments @Jan: wow, two of the books you added for Goodwill are long! Are you already reading them? Will it affect our "read as many books as possible" strategy?

@Everybody: Sally's 2-difficult-letters word is 1 letter shorter in total than our word. So we will absolutely need to read our word more times that they do if we want any chance. And their team is also a lot larger than ours. D:

I'd say go ahead and finish it for this week. L's are generally fairly easy to find especially since we can use character names as well.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Okay, will do!

message 1056: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 Little late for me to be clarifying this rule but for partially spelled words do we only get points for letters that are consecutive? For example right now for our 9th spelling of tinsel we have T and I claimed and S, E, and L claimed. Will we get points for S, E, and L or only if we have a book with N claimed also? Hope that made sense

message 1057: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 Hmm, good point Alysa. I am already reading both of those longer books but I can easily put them on hold for a week and finish them after the challenge so I can get shorter books and more letters done. I'll replace them with books that help more for the final round.

Deanna | 3529 comments JanEyre9 wrote: "Little late for me to be clarifying this rule but for partially spelled words do we only get points for letters that are consecutive? For example right now for our 9th spelling of tinsel we have T ..."

No, the letters for partial words do not have to be consecutive. We'll get credit for all of the books/letters in the first partial word.

We can only get points for one "partial spelling". So for our current 9th spelling, we would get points for TISEL, but we wouldn't get points for our 10th "I" unless we complete the missing N in the 9th spelling first.

message 1060: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 ahh ok, thanks!

message 1061: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments Does anyone think they can get that N? I bought a quick i read last night, I can swap it out for a short N if we don't have one. This BOM has slowed me down a bit, I am not a huge fan of anthologies

message 1062: by Alysa (last edited Nov 30, 2018 10:09AM) (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Hopefully Rebecca and Megan will check in ASAP. Their books will give us a better sense of what letters are missing...

I noticed that Rebecca has been doing Dark Descent BOM too, even though that book is not on the spreadsheet for her yet.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I wouldn't get too excited about claiming our full 9th spelling...
I was just "spying" on Rebecca and Megan since they rarely check in. Based on their Wheel shelves, it looks like Megan has read 2 more books so far but 1 may not be eligible because it's shelved as Childrens on the front page and may not have verifiable word count (at least it doesn't on ARbookfind); and Rebecca has read a few books but mainly not the ones on the spreadsheet.

message 1069: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Researching has shown:

I apparently cannot get a copy in time to read next week, but just in case anyone can, Dead Poets Society works well. It isn't long, and in addition to the D title it also seems to have an O character.

Just saying. ;D

message 1070: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments So I noticed that our Week 6 tab has "Save Xmas" tasks. I guess it can't hurt to mark whatever's worth a few extra points here and there, if we're reading the books regardless, LOL.

message 1071: by Danielle Gypsy Soul (new)

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) I will probably have my I book roll over to finish for the next one since we have an extra I. I think it makes more sense to do that.

I have picked 7 books along with my I book I'll already have started and should finish one spelling of Goodwill.

Rebecca (radf) | 1087 comments What is our strategy for next week? Are we doing the extra twist to the challenge or not worrying about it? Are we focusing on the vowels more than completing the word? Just wondering because I'd like to plan and I don't want to find books to fulfill "goodwill" if we aren't worrying about the consonants.

Also, I have the new BOM of the month so that's one I will be reading for next week.

We're going to try to finish as many spellings of goodwill as we can to rack up tough letters. We can only have one partial word, so we have to spell out all of the letters.

The extra twist is optional. If you have a book that words for one of the tasks or if you want to use a task or two to pick some of your books, that is fine. If you just want to worry about the spelling that is fine as well.

I am hoping that Sally will waste time picking stuff for the optional twists, so that while they’re busy with that, we can out-read them 😅

Alysa H. | 3840 comments FYI, Team Harlequin Demon (in the lead by far on Traditional points and closely trailing us on BOM points) is only a few books lower than us on Difficult Letters but have apparently chosen “sleighbells” for next week, so we won’t have competition from them there.
But Team Igor are not terribly far behind, and like Team Sally they have chosen “cookies”.
The race is on!

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I can’t find where (if?) this is posted elsewhere, but how many DQ’s do we have to answer to constitute participation in BOM discussion?
I know participation means a substantive contribution, as opposed to just “I liked it” and that’s it.
But like if, say, my library copy of My True Love Gave To Me turns up towards the end of this week, and I read it by Saturday afternoon, but don’t have time to answer more than a few of the DQ’s before challenge end (preferably on whatever my favorite stories end up being :D) will that be enough to count?
