I was thinking this morning that I should prioritize my stack of books to read those that don't work for wheel first (just in case). 😸

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 1266 comments I am in baout 20+ different reading challenges, so I just read a bunch and try to fit as many challenges as possible with my books! I have a list of challenges I go through and check after each book hahaha

message 303: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 Right at the time the challenge starts my husband and I will be heading to a rare dinner out with other adults. I'm looking forward to it but also wonder if he'll listen to one of my audio books in the car and if our friends will mind if I take frequent bathroom breaks so I can get a few pages in :)

message 304: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I recently promised my daughter that I would read her The Secret Garden. She wanted me to start last night, but after a quick check to make sure it's long enough to count for Wheel, I was like "How about we start in a few days?" and she went off to read one of her chapter books. A+ parenting!

message 305: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 Well played Alysa! We just started reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling with my daughter, I should have waited another few days!

message 306: by Brittany (new)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 1266 comments Oh no, is this one of those challenges where start dates are important? I can never keep track of those since I add books as currently reading to know which order to read in

Deanna | 3529 comments Brittany wrote: "Oh no, is this one of those challenges where start dates are important? I can never keep track of those since I add books as currently reading to know which order to read in"

Yes. Books have to be started after the challenge start, which is 5pm EST Saturday.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments We haven’t heard from Danielle in a while. I hope she’s alright, and not dropping out...

@Brittany: How far in advance do you usually plan what you’re going to read next?

message 309: by Brittany (new)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 1266 comments Ok we will see what I start after that, I try not to sign up for those, people get too crazy haha

message 310: by Brittany (last edited Oct 25, 2018 07:37AM) (new)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 1266 comments I have a big stack that i choose from based on books I have won, ARCs to review, boosk to review for publishing companies and library trips so I read about 3+ books at a time physical/audio, etc. depending on what format is available and where I am at. Car audio books take me the longest becuase most of th ebooks I end up with on CD aren't appropriate for my 7 year old to hear haha so I can only listen when he is not in the car. I alos have real life book clubs that sometimes make me move up and add in specific books

So mostly it is all about deadlines, when reviews are due or books or due back to the library to real life book group meeting dates

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Captains, are we going to have a thread here?:

Wheel III POST READ BOOKS HERE

message 313: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments I'm back! I missed a lot while I was gone!!

I'm starting with Year One (Chronicles of The One, #1) by Nora Roberts and then probably moving on to November 9 by Colleen Hoover unless it looks like we really need another letter done

message 314: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments Alysa wrote: "Captains, are we going to have a thread here?:

We thought that it would be best to have everyone post their read books in this thread so we could discuss, what do you guys think?

message 315: by JanEyre9 (last edited Oct 25, 2018 08:18AM) (new)

JanEyre9 I'm good with either. Sometimes when there are too many threads I forget to check everything so having it all in one place works for me.

message 316: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I would personally like having a separate thread for completion posts, but I'm good with whatever the captains decide.

Maybe we could try having everything here for the first week and see how it goes?

message 317: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments

Only one day seven hours and 52 minutes to go!

Question of the day

What is the longest series in which you have read all of the books to date (excluding novellas)?

At the moment, it is the Kate Daniels series for me. I'm on the O book for the Kinsey Millhone series by Grafton (which I just downloaded for an audiobook next week), but I have a ways to go before getting to the last book.

message 318: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments I usually give up on series or it takes me a long time to finish them, I think my longest one is Throne of Glass, but I still have to read Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, #7) by Sarah J. Maas . I have it waiting for me!

message 319: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments I forgot about Mercy Thompson. That's 10 books so far, so a tie for me between Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson until March.

message 320: by Brittany (new)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 1266 comments I think The Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind was the longest series I completed, but I DO love Mercy and have read ALL of those

message 321: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 I suppose my longest series would be Harry Potter or Anne of Green Gables

message 322: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments My longest series was definitely Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampires (15 books!)

Next longest I think were Lemony Snicket’s A Series of
Unfortunate Events and Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels. Those are both 13 books, though the latter also has follow-up short stories.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments So, just a random comment:

◈ Books must be more than 160 pages in length.

I am amused about other teams stating that books must be “at least 160 pages” which is not the same thing. During Cutthroat last winter, we actually had a book challenged and removed because it was exactly 160 pages, and not “more than”. Just sayin’. 😏
For Wheel, since it isn’t set up for teams to challenge each other’s books, I guess the mods would have to keep an eye on everything to make sure things really do fit the rules? Seems like it could be a lot of work for them!

On another topic, some of our teammates still have not checked in for a long while. I am getting nervous!

I posted a question for the mods about the 160 page book since the information is contradictory. The rule you listed points to no, but the point system says 160 to 200 and the spreadsheet formula would accept 160 so they seem to say yes. I'll let you know.

Regarding our teammates, don't worry. I've been on teams with both and sent reminders of the challenge start out this morning.

message 325: by Deanna (new)

Deanna | 3529 comments Karen says the spreadsheet formula is correct, so a 160 page book is acceptable for the challenge.

message 326: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Interesting... By that logic, I wonder if that old challenge to Cutthroat should have been rejected, but since the same point system wasn’t in place for that challenge, I guess we’ll never know.

I actually found an O book that is 160 pages. Not a lot of points for length, but good to know it can be used in a pinch!

message 327: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (radf) | 1087 comments Hello Everyone, I'm going to start with Hitting the Books for "N". There's a character named Lindsey Norris. I'm probably just going to keep checking the spreadsheet for what we need as far as what I'm going to read next. Looks like we are in very good shape!
Does anyone know when the new word comes out? I leave on Thursday and I want to plan my reading accordingly for during my trip since I won't be able to check in.

message 328: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Apparently we get the next word 1-2 days before the start of the next round.

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) I'm starting with Cover Your Eyes but I put several more books on the SS that I plan to read this week.

Oh yeah I forgot about Sookie! I also love Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series

No worries! If you post here as you start reading stuff, any one of us can add your books to the spreadsheet as needed, just so the Captains can track your letter options.

message 333: by Brittany (new)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 1266 comments Excellent, thanks Alysa

message 334: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Well, I just finished -- and reviewed! -- my last book before Wheel.
If I have time tomorrow in between my daughter's morning karate class and pre-Halloween stuff in the afternoon, maybe I'll try to catch up on writing some NetGalley reviews. Goodness knows I won't be doing that very much once I start reading for Wheel.

Because why write reviews when one could just be starting a new book, amirite?!

message 335: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments I have 30 minutes left in my last book before wheel! Then I’m going to the movies and I’ll be home to get started a little after go time

message 339: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments I just came here to post the same thing!!

I’m at the theater to watch a Star is Born, can’t wait for it to be over and get started on my book!

Alysa H. | 3840 comments So I did in fact start reading The Secret Garden with my daughter at bedtime an hour ago! I am adding it to the spreadsheet, but I don’t know what week we will actually finish it, only that it will be at some point during Wheel. So, Captains, please don’t assign it a letter yet :)

I am going back to reading my other book now!

Candy Corn Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery, #22) by Leslie Meier 10/27
How it fits: Title C
Word in text: "Nevertheless, the cut-glass canister of candy corn that had appeared in Country Cousins..." p. 5

JanEyre9 Great job Deanna!

Ashley (itsmedaisy) | 279 comments How was Candy Corn Murder? That looked like the kind of book that could go either way

Deanna | 3529 comments Ashley wrote: "How was Candy Corn Murder? That looked like the kind of book that could go either way"

It was so-so. Honestly more Halloween in a small town than mystery, and I figured out the plot ahead of time on a couple of key plot points. Still it made for a relaxing evening.

Rebecca (radf) | 1087 comments We have two weeks of candy corn right? We don’t get a new word until the end of next week on the 9th or 10th?

Deanna | 3529 comments Rebecca F. (Nightengale) wrote: "We have two weeks of candy corn right? We don’t get a new word until the end of next week on the 9th or 10th?"

No, just one week per word. The next word should be announced either Thursday or Friday. We have until Saturday to finish our books for candy corn. I don't have an exact time at the moment. Europe ended their daylight savings time this weekend, and it ends in the US next weekend. There's a request on the captains' board for an official countdown clock, which I'll post once the mods respond.
