Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse - Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena - Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

1/4: (view spoiler)[ Re-read, but still love this book. I still laugh my head off at his math teacher trying to kill him. Grover is still one of my favorite characters. His mom is still great and protective. Awesome how Percy kills the Minotaur. I hate how Percy's mother gets taken by the Minotaur and how Hades has her. I love how he meets Annabeth, and I loved how he found out whose kid he was. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 6
(view spoiler)[ first time reading this book and there has been a lot of information thrown at the reader so far. I am not too familiar with the greek gods so it may be a little bit to follow along at some points. So far I think Percy is going to end up being somebody very important. Poor kid though has had it rough being kicked out of school after school, then made to believe he was crazy when no one else remembered Mrs Dobbs (hide spoiler)]

Is there any sort of underwater world in this book since it features Poseidon?

Chapter 11
(view spoiler)[ oh the quest has started :) I kinda figured he was going to be Poseidon's son even without reading the blurb about the book since his mom kept referring to his father being gone to sea on a journey. I wonder if Percy and Annabeth will end up falling for each other. (hide spoiler)]

25% (view spoiler)[ Grover is the best! He's cracking me up throughout this beginning and I'm glad he's along for the adventure.
Annabeth is also amazing-- it's too bad Percy often doesn't listen to her. Girl knows her shit.

50%(view spoiler)[ I like the quest in this story... of Percy going to rescue his mother from Hades. Laughed a the bit where they said only a few have journeyed to Hades and returned... including in that list, Houdini. lol

75%(view spoiler)[ Really like the underworld, featuring the crossing of the River Styx and Cerberus guarding the doors. Tartarus is one of my favorite stories in Greek mythology. Tho kind of an 'easy way out' as far as the quest progress goes... I still liked how many of these spirits of the dead just wanted some attention! Pretty funny.

100%(view spoiler)[ Not hard to infer that the god of war was going to be responsible for this plot to start a war. But it was interesting that Luke and Ares were being used by a severed-into-pieces-dead Titan.

Finished: (view spoiler)[ I now hate Luke because he betrayed the entire Camp. Ares and Percy's fight was great. I love how Percy was able to defeat Ares. I hated how Ares was responsible for almost starting a war. I was glad when Percy was able to save him mother and prevent a war among the gods. (hide spoiler)]

I never read this series when I was younger, and I thought I would give the first book a try since it was a buddy read. This book is on the younger side of the YA Fantasy genre, and I can really feel it. Everyone is very child-like in their response to things. I am hoping Percy matures a little. I wish the writing was a little bit more serious too. I was a little shocked that Percy's mom died, but then again I guess she just went to the Underworld and is maybe not permanently gone. I am enjoying the crossover between the Greek mythology and the real-world. It is not overdone or written in a cheesy way. I am interested to know if the dreams Percy has been having are real or prophecies/messages or really just dreams. (hide spoiler)]

I'm actually enjoying this book somewhat. It has been rather entertaining. I thought it was going to be too childish since the MCs are younger than other YA novels, but it really isn't that immature. I was hoping that it wouldn't be too silly since the characters are all middle schoolers, and luckily it's not. It has just the right amount of seriousness. (hide spoiler)]

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to. Not my favorite, but still fun to read. I may even consider reading the rest of the series to just know what happens. Gabe was pretty obnoxious, though. I know he was supposed to be, but he was obnoxious in a childish way. Overall, 3/5. (hide spoiler)]
