Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments I just decided to join to this readathon. Better late than never, I guess. I find that readathons often just make me rush with my reading and not really enjoy, so for this one I'm trying to take it easy and really feel the book. I don't yet have a clear tbr for this readathon, but I have a super big pile of books waiting.

I still need to figure out some things about this weird readathon community. There are so many topics and stuff to check.

Susan | 678 comments Enjoy Elsi! I’m trying to get my 16 yo son to join also. While he’s not a voracious reader, he has participated in the past. By the way, your English is quite strong.

I hope your son will join. I also tried to get my sisters to join, but they didn't really seem interested.

I have tried to improve my English with English literature. I guess I'm making progress. :) Although I won't be reading anything in English during the marathon as that would be a lot slower.

message 4: by Elsi (new)

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments Now to some planning. I want to read all kinds of books during the marathon. I found the graphic novel version of Coraline and a really interesting new short story collection Sammuta valot! : pieniä kauheita tarinoita / Sytytä valot! : pieniä kauniita tarinoita today, and those are definitely on my TBR. I still need a great audiobook, some "normal" physical novels and maybe some poetry. I won't be reading that all, but it's good to have a couple of books as a back-up plan.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments Welcome, Elsi! Your English is really good! Don't sweat readathons, the point is to have fun and just read what you can. If you're not having fun and you're feeling stressed, take a break. The group is a bit overwhelming at first, there are a LOT of topics. :) I'm still going through them! Good luck!

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments Starting survey
1. What fine part of the world are you reading from today? - Finland

3. Which snack are you most looking forward to? - I get to try some new chocolates from a little chocolate factory near me.

5. If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? - I'm trying to enjoy and have fun!

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? - My family has a tradition about watching this one Finnish comedy show every Saturday night, so I needed to explain to them why I can't watch it with them. My sister also wanted to play with me, but I gave her my phone for some Paw Patrol. I guess it's true: Paw Patrol actually saves real lives!

Closing survey

2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!

This haiku is in Finnish as almost all my books are in Finnish.

Mangopuun alla
Itke minulle taivas
Sammuta valot!

And here is a poorly translated version of it. It doesn't really work as a haiku, but I can't do better.

Under the mango tree
Heaven, cry for me
Turn off the lights!

I tried to find a diverse selection of books from different
genres/countries/lengths/formats just to give me some variety. Of course there is no way I could read all these, but I guess it's better to have a "few" extra books.

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments Opening survey

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

Finland! We are enjoying a nice spring weather right now so I’ll be able to read in my backyard.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

It has to be Find Me since I just read the first book Call Me By Your Name and need some kind of happy ending to the story to feel complete again.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

https://teeleidi.fi/kauppa/irtoteet/v...
I don’t know if it really counts as a snack but I’ll be making a lot of tea. This Finnish green tea with pear and rose petals is so good!

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

I’m a 17-year-old student. I love reading (isn’t that obvious) and tea, and my readathon is probably going to consist of those two. I’m Finnis AND an introvert, so I can’t really introduce myself properly.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today?

For the last two dewey’s readathons I didn’t really even open any social medias. This time I’m planning to participate more on the social side of this event. I’m also going to do more activities while I’m reading. I started sewing face masks a couple of days ago so I hope I’ll get a lot of those done while listening to audio books.

Here is my bingo board!
I haven't really planned my books to match the prompts, other than for the pick my book prompt (Someone choose Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine for me) and the least favourite genre prompt (My girlfriend found this masterpiece of a Harlequin romance for me: His Best Friend's Sister. I'm not sure if I can get through it.)

message 36: by Elsi (new)

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments I had a little painting session listening to Eleanor messing up her life. Now going to have a snack (some chocolate chip cookies with tea) and then continuing to the book I'm not necessarily excited about: His Best Friend's Sister. I hope I'll get through it to cross off the least favorite genre thing from the bingo board.

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments Mid-readathon survey

1. What are you reading right now?

I'm listening to Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

2. How many books have you read so far?

If I have counted them correctly I've finished 3 books so far. I also have two more that I've started.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Still haven't started Find Me so that will probably be my next read once I finish the two I have started

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Our household is quite noisy, but headphones block some of it out.

5. What surprises you most about the Readathon so far?

I can't believe I still don't feel tired. It's 4 am at the moment and I haven't even had any coffee.

Enjoy the last hours of the readathon!

message 44: by Elsi (new)

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments I read a ton of books during this readathon. I found some new favourite books and enjoyed almost all the books I read. I'll write a summary of everything I read during the last 24 hours once I've had my afternoon tea. Thank you everyone for making this event amazing once again!

message 45: by Elsi (new)

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments Closing survey:

1. How would you assess your reading overall?

I think this readathon was very successful for me. I read a ton of books and probably at least a million pages, though most of my books were quick reads.

2. Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it?

I wanted to stay awake for the whole 24 hours so I made sure to have enough variety and light reads. I read a lot of children's fiction, comics, poetry and other "easier" books.

3. What was your favorite snack?

Tea! I still don't know if it is a snack but I couldn't read without my cup of green tea.

4. Wanna volunteer for our next event? Stay tuned for the recap post!

I don't feel responsible enough to do that. Maybe when I am a year or two older.

Elsi (elsielsi) | 110 comments Readathon summary:

Started at 3 pm

hour 1: I decided to start with Before I Go to Sleep because I've been meaning to read it for such a long time. I ate some apple slices and a chocolate chip cookie and drank two cups of tea.

hour 2: I continued with reading Before I Go to Sleep. At this point the book started to get really good and I couldn't put it down.

hour 3: I was still reading Before I Go to Sleep when my dad asked me to cook something. I made some fried rice while listening to Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.

hour 4: I read a bit of both Before I Go to Sleep and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. I also ate the fried rice with my family.

hour 5: As I couldn't miss my weekly visit to the sauna, I decided to try to read there. I went with a non-fiction, We Should All Be Feminists. I read the whole 45-page book in sauna. I'll definitely have to start to read in sauna more, the atmosphere was amazing.

hour 6: I finished Before I Go to Sleep. I snacked on some chocolate and drank a bit more tea while I listened to a bit more of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.

hour 7-8: We decided to have a reading date with my girlfriend! Thank you Sylvi for motivating me to read! I decided to go with Ronia, the Robber's Daughter which is one of my childhood favourites. We'll have to have more skype reading dates in the future, it was so much fun. Ronia, the Robber's Daughter made me cry so much.

hour 9: I finished Ronia, the Robber's Daughter. We ended the reading date because I was too emotional to do anything and it was also getting late. I continued listening to Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.

hour 10-12: I had a midnight painting session. I've been trying to paint a sapphic couple on my jean jacket. While I was doing that, I listened to Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine.

hour 13: I procrastinated starting His Best Friend's Sister by listening to Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Eleanor was such a great character I didn't want to leave her.

hour 14: Luckily His Best Friend's Sister was a quick read. It was about as bad as I thought it would be. Luckily I got it finished in just a bit over an hour. I had some cookies and tea to get me through it.

hour 15: I also finished Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. It was a great read, I'll recommend it to everyone. The ending was quite surprising but exactly what I needed.

hour 16: I started Find Me which I have been waiting to get into for SO LONG. I also made some more tea. At this point I couldn't count my tea intake anymore.

hour 17-18: Find Me was a bit of a disappointment but I continued reading it hoping it would get better.

hour 19: We had an another reading date with my girlfriend, I finished Find Me but didn't really do it for me. (view spoiler) So needless to say, I would not recommend it.

hour 20-21: The reading date was still going on. I read two really short books:100 Months and Runoksia. I liked them both a lot. I also started Et kävele yksin which was a re-read.

hour 22: I finished Et kävele yksin. It was exactly as okay-ish as I remembered, nothing special. I flied through it really fast.

hour 23-24: I ended my readathon with The Boy in the Dress which I found from my little sister's shelf. The authors initials qualified for the bingo challenge, yay! The story was heartwarming and really important for kids to hear. I didn't think I would enjoy it this much but Walliams' writing style is perfect!
