Kimberly Hockaday | 79 comments Hello Everyone,

I am a poet and author of 4 books. I am seeking a job in which I am able to freely write from home. I can begin immediately. If anyone know of any legit magazines or online websites, please message me.

Thank you.

Poetry isn't a lucrative field, generally speaking, but here are a couple of websites that might (I say might) help you in your search:

http://www.poetrysociety.org/psa/
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/

Thank you. I do write poetry but I also enjoy writing on topics as well as short stories. I am open and hoping to be able to write for a magazine or newspaper. But thank you for your list and I will check those out.

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments Kimberly, have you set yourself up on Medium.com? I don't earn much from that, but it's enough to keep me in coffee!

Thank you will look into it. First time I heard of Medium.com

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments A few of us use it. We post things on Medium and then post the link in the Medium posts threads on here. We catch up reading each others articles on Medium and clap for each others posts and comment as and when.

If you're a part of the Medium partner program you can put your posts behind the paywall and any interaction you get from paying members ($5 a month or $50 a year), will earn you a small amount of money paid monthly into your account. I made back my membership costs in about four months and have made a small profit so far. You don't have to be a member to earn money but as a non member you'd only be able to read 3 articles a month. There are publications on there you can also write for.

I think I've got that lot right!

Sounds interesting. Do I have to pay the $5 fee if I just want to write? How does that work? Is it automatically taken out when they pay me. I went to the website and wasn't clear on that? Also are they opened to all types of work? Meaning fiction too because I see they mention storytellers but I did not come across any fictional pieces.

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments No you don’t need to pay the $5 if you just want to write. Not paying it limits the number of stories you can read. And yes they do take fiction. Dale has written lots of it. Some on his own profile and some he’s submitted to some of their magazines. I’m not sure how they take the $5 monthly payment. I paid for the year upfront by card so I could read everyone else’s articles.

Just before you publish an article, you also get to tag it and when you start typing in a tag word it’ll list the ones the system has and you can pick the ones that best fits your article/story/poems. You can choose up to five. Sam has published poems.

It’s not a big earner. I publish about 3 articles a week and earn less than $30 a month. It gets you out there.

If you want to pay monthly, they probably set up an automatic deduction from your card on a monthly basis. I paid the annual fee, which saves $10/year.

As DJ said, they're open to everything, including fiction and poetry . . . so long as it doesn't violate their terms, which are pretty standard.

Once you get started, it's worth submitting to some Medium publications, because they have a lot more reach. I can help you with that when you're ready.

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments I need help with that, if you're offering. The prospect of submitting to the Medium publications terrifies me. I need basics like which buttons to press. Do I put a draft somewhere? Do I email them? How does it work?

Kimberly Hockaday | 79 comments Thank you everyone. You have been so helpful. I am seeking full time work or at least part-time, but Medium seems like a great start to something amazing. Definitely giving it a try. I was going to write for a website called Wordisode but they appeared to be no longer running. I use to get weekly stories from them and then it stopped. Checked their website and it's no longer up. Their facebook page hasn't been updated in a while. I was disappointed. They had a good unique thing going.

Sure thing. What publication(s) do you want to submit to? The process may vary from one to the next.

D.J. Cooper | 1028 comments I’m not sure Dale. What’s the process for Lit up and the Writers Cooperative? I’ll try to think of something for those two.

Kimberly Hockaday | 79 comments Just 1 more question before I dive in. Is your work on there protected? Are there rules in place to protect your work?

Okay . . .

The Writing Cooperative'ssubmission requirements page explains what they are looking for, formatting requirements, etc. Near the bottom you'll find a link to their writer request form. Fill that out and submit it to them.

Lit Up's submission guidelines page is much the same. They also have a submission form to request being added as a writer.

Once you are added, you write your story as always, making sure you meet the publication's requirements. Then, click the "..." button at the top right to open the menu. The second command is "Add to publication." Click that and you can select from all the publications you've been added to. When you're ready to submit, click the "Ready to publish?" button. Because you've set a publication, the "Publish" button will change to a "Submit to publication" button. Click that, and you're all set. The publication's editors will review the piece. They may give you feedback in comments or emails if they want to suggest changes. If they accept the piece, they will publish it for you.

I hope that all makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Medium's Terms of Service are here. See the section "Content rights & responsibilities." That probably answers your main questions.
