Laura (bookishlaura) | 1 comments I'll be reading "Sugar Queen" by Sarah Addison Allen. I love "Garden Spells" and "First Frost" by her so hoping I'll enjoy this one too

message 102: by Karen (new)

Karen | 161 comments I’m reading Sugar Run which is on a few lists of 2019 anticipated books. It’s out tomorrow.

message 103: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Blocher | 64 comments I'm reading The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. This was the only book that should up on my TBR list that had any of the words in it. I also got this off of Anne Bogel's podcast.

message 104: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Paige | 2 comments A new Southern Noir novel Sugar Run was just released. One of Amazon’s most anticipated books of January 2019.

I think I will read The Sugar Queen, but I'm curious to see what you all will suggest!"

I just finished that one for this prompt. I liked it a lot!

Crumb | 395 comments Doug wrote: "How do we feel about Pop. 1280? Does this count (since it's technically an abbreviation...and, yes, it IS possible that I am overthinking this...)?"

I OVERTHINK everything for this challenge.. I'm one of the technical people.. but it is the three letters "pop" so I'd go with it.

message 107: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 2 comments I am reading Pop. 1280 by Jim Thompson

message 108: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I think I'll be reading Pops: Fatherhood in Pieces for this one.

message 109: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 126 comments I met the author of Sugar Run today and got the book signed. So I’m probably reading that but I’ll wait to see what the group pick is for November.

message 110: by Yvette (new)

Yvette Boegheim | 10 comments I Thought of going with Anatomy of a Song: The Oral History of 45 Iconic Hits That Changed Rock, R&B and Pop
Its in the subtitle but it looks like a fun read for Musiclovers like me

message 111: by Cheryl (last edited Jan 12, 2019 11:26AM) (new)

Cheryl Hager (cheryl_is_reading) | 24 comments I am planning on one of these: Sugar or Up to the Challenge or NPR The Best of Pop Culture Happy Hour

I had nothing on my TBR, but The Poppy War, and that already has a placement.

message 112: by ekr (last edited Jan 20, 2019 02:21PM) (new)

ekr (inkwashesout) | 1 comments I‘ll probably read the graphic novel Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story, based on the true story of Betty Ross, an elder from Manitoba’s Cross Lake First Nation. Either that or Beneath the Sugar Sky.

message 113: by Melissa (new)

Melissa N | 11 comments I wholeheartedly recommend the book American POP by
Snowden Wright it was amazing!!

Mrs Heidrich | 6 comments Nullifidian wrote: "For anyone taking Alisia's suggestions, please be aware that Naguib Mahfouz's Sugar Street is the third book of the Cairo Trilogy. Palace Walk and Palace of Desire come before, in that order. Howev..."

Thanks for the information! Think I might actually try this series!

message 116: by Karen (new)

Karen O | 2 comments I have a copy of Step Aside, Pops by Kate Beaton. Maybe I'll try that.

message 117: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Christensen (christensega) | 5 comments Mr. Popper's Penguins

Looking through the audiobook choices at my library I picked this one out because of the "pop" in the title and I recall the Jim Carey movie of the same name. I didn't realize it was a children's book at the time!

message 118: by Leonie (new)

Leonie For those who like historical fiction: The Cost of Sugar

message 119: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 109 comments I teach English as a Second Language, so yesterday I read Hop On Pop by the wonderful Dr. Seuss with a group of six year olds: they're starting to learn how to read and write simple words, and they were awesome at spelling out all the new English words. Their favourite part was where Pat wanted to sit on the cactus (I preferred the fish in the tree, personally).

message 120: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnpoepping) | 9 comments Jennifer wrote: "I’m thinking I might go easy on this category and read Hop on Pop by Dr Seuss. Also found Pop!: the invention of bubble gum by Meghan McCarthy."

GENIUS.

message 121: by Frogli (new)

Frogli | 96 comments Thank you whoever it was that mentioned Black Sugar by Miguel Bonnefoy , I wasn't sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it.

message 122: by Isabel (last edited Jan 27, 2019 10:05AM) (new)

Isabel (xisabelx) | 7 comments Checking in to say I made a listopia for this challenge, feel free to add any books you've found that fit the bill.

I'm currently reading The Sugar Queen and I'm liking it so far! But I also recommend Pop Goes the Weasel which I've read already. It's the second book in a crime/detective/thriller series and is quite graphic, but I liked it for a holiday read.

message 123: by Alix (new)

Alix (alixbrand) | 57 comments Did the same thing as the bitter prompt and searched the word sugar. Ended up choosing this one. Sugar

message 124: by Kira (last edited Feb 15, 2019 11:09AM) (new)

Kira (kiraaa) | 31 comments Since I'm a communications major, I think I'll go with Pop Culture Freaks: Identity, Mass Media, and Society for this prompt.

message 125: by Soph ♡ (new)

Soph ♡ | 130 comments Decided to go for Poppet by Mo Hayder. Been a while since I read a book in this series.

message 126: by Emanuel (new)

Emanuel | 253 comments I'll read Pão de Açúcar. Açúcar= sugar

message 127: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy Wilson (chrissywilson80) | 4 comments This was a cute YA book I read if anyone likes that genre
Cake Pop Crush

message 128: by Gem (new)

Gem | 128 comments Black Sugar and Sugar Money (both recommended elsewhere on this thread) both look interesting for this one.

There's also PopCo (which I read some years ago, and therefore don't want to read again for this prompt!).

message 129: by Tori (new)

Tori (libroperdido) | 41 comments I read The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen for this prompt. I'm fairly ambivalent about this novel.

message 130: by Keica (new)

Keica (xkeica) | 5 comments I haven't seen it mentioned, but I'm reading American Pop for this one! It just came out earlier this month. I started reading it yesterday and I'm enjoying it so far!

message 131: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 231 comments I went with the Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us that was mentioned earlier. It was horrifying but extremely educational. I've already cleaned up most of my eating habits, but damn this made it easier to bring the carrots on my camping trip.

message 132: by Anabell (last edited Mar 17, 2019 07:09AM) (new)

Anabell | 355 comments Steph wrote: "I plan to read Sugar

Other books I have on my kindle that qualify for this prompt are:
Challenge..."

I just read Challenge and was pleasantly surprised about this author and the story.
I started out thinking 'what a Wanker' but the author managed to completely change my mind. I like that... I even started reading the next in the series.

message 133: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Bloom | 19 comments I'm honestly not trying to get political but Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's Future by Pete Buttgieg works for this challenge. :)

message 134: by KF-in-Georgia (new)

KF-in-Georgia | 117 comments Deborah wrote: "I'm honestly not trying to get political but Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's Future by Pete Buttgieg works for this challenge. :)"

And I've got this one! And I like Mayor Pete.

My initial pick for this category was a reread of The Wild Man from Sugar Creek: The Political Career of Eugene Talmadge (last read in college in the 70s). Talmadge was a Trump personality in a cheap seersucker suit. Georgia's legislature rewrote the state's constitution a couple of times to get the budget money away from Talmadge.

I'll probably read both books.

message 135: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (rellie) | 8 comments I've narrowed it down to:

The Wedding Challenge
Challenge
Challenge the Darkness
The Challenge

I'll probably read them all, but I'm leaning towards Challenge the Darkness. I'm on a paranormal romance binge.

message 136: by Jake (new)

Jake Jeffries (jjeffries1776) | 1 comments Beauty Pop, Vol. 1 by Kiyoko Arai was my choice here. I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

message 137: by Lucie Renee (new)

Lucie Renee (lucierenee) | 33 comments I work in a library and stumbled on this one ... A Spoonful of Sugar: A Nanny's Story. The back cover says "... this delightful memoir from Britain's oldest living nanny is practically perfect in every way."

message 138: by Christy (new)

Christy | 358 comments I'm going with Rapture Ready!: Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture. I'm not sure how deep it's going to be, but it'll be a peek into a world I don't see a lot, and I think it'll be fun.

message 139: by Christine (new)

Christine H | 496 comments Many thanks to the folks who mentioned pop-up books! I noodled around and found This Book Is a Planetarium: And Other Extraordinary Pop-Up Contraptions, which seems like it'll be really fun to "read" with the kids!

message 141: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 11 comments I’ll be reading ‘Challenge Accepted’ by Celeste Barber. I’ve been wanting to read it and now I have an excuse.

message 142: by Emanuel (new)

Emanuel | 253 comments I'll read Pão de Açúcar.

message 143: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 30 comments I read Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story for this one. I honestly didn't realize how short it was, but that's okay! It still counts, right?

message 144: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 12 comments Kelli wrote: "I loved Wild by Cheryl Strayed so I’m reading Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar for this prompt."

I read it too for this prompt!

message 145: by Lucie Renee (new)

Lucie Renee (lucierenee) | 33 comments Someone here recommended Pops: Fatherhood in Pieces. Our library had it...306.874 Chabon.
On the same Non-Fiction shelf, the spine of another book caught my attention because I saw the word "sugar" and I thought "Aha! Another choice to complete the prompt".
This other book is Sugar in My Bowl: Real Women Write About Real Sex ...306.708.
They are both short, so I'm going to read them both.

message 146: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 0 comments I have just read Bird & Sugar Boy by Sofie Laguna - it's an excellent short YA book - Australian.

message 147: by Dana (new)

Dana Cristiana (silvermoon1923) The only one I have on my TBR is Challenge Accepted! by Celeste Barber.

message 148: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 782 comments I read Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed. I really liked the book. I had never heard of Dear Sugar. Having read Wild I knew a little about Cheryl Strayed. I would read some of those letters & think I can’t wait to see what she says to this. The best part about the book was it filled my last prompt. I have finished the 2019 challenge.

I love Celeste. I got to see her standup tour last year, and she was even better in person. Definitely go see her if you have the chance!
