Once the reading challenge starts, you can come over here and share the first book you're reading! Maybe you'll find someone else reading the exact same one?

Have you finished a book? Tell us as well! Maybe even add some of your thoughts about the book. Did you enjoy it? Or didn't you?

What's going to be your next read?

Every small progress you make, you can share here! Even if you just want to talk about a huge event that just occurred and you need to shout about it for a bit.

Barry (denimlich) My first pick is A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe! This is probably the one that I wanted to read most, so I'm very happy I picked it out first!

edit: I decided to pick out a second book and I got Tim'rous Beastie

message 7: by Kamisha (new)

Kamisha (kamishamish) | 15 comments My first pick out of the jar was Jade City and I'm beyond excited to read this! I kept meaning to last year but never got around to it, and I've heard so many wonderful things about this book!

message 8: by Aymee (new)

Aymee (asphaltcowgrrl) | 53 comments I made two picks - one backlog and one ARC:

In Europe's Shadow: Two Cold Wars and a Thirty-Year Journey Through Romania and Beyond

I Invited Her In

But... because I have a problem, I'm also reading Bird Box. I found it on sale a couple days ago and had to dive right in.

message 9: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 146 comments Happy new year everyone.
My first is The Dark Vault by V E Schwab- I've wanted to read these books and them being published again but together last year now gives me the perfect chance. I'm really enjoying it so far. :)

I also had to pick another so at some point very soon, I'll be starting Empress of All Seasons as well.

message 10: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor My first pick from my jar was Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl, and I am excited to read it. I have to finish my current read first but hopefully I shall be getting to this one soon.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 86 comments Happy New Year, guys! My first pick out of the jar was The Terror, which I have been looking forward to ever since I watched the excellent TV series.

Misty's Book Space (mistysbookspace) | 1 comments Happy New Year everyone!! So my husband actually pulled the first book out of my TBR jar for the month and it was Each Little Lie by Tom Bale. The good thing is that it actually works for a read-a-thon I am participating in this month as well.

message 13: by Elisa (new)

Elisa (elisabookishexpat) Happy New Year everyone!

The first book of the year for me is Obsidio, which is great because it aligns with my resolution to finish all the series I have open this year!

But because I like having two books going, I picked a second one later in the day to alternate, and it’s Broken Things, by Lauren Oliver.

Happy New Year, everyone!

My first jar pick was Darkest Hours, a horror anthology I've been looking forward to! It's pretty short, so I might try to read it all before I pick a second one, but I may also read some graphic novels and manga throughout the day since I have some leftover from Short-a-thon that are due back at the library soon!

message 15: by Nele (new)

Nele (neltjuhv) | 30 comments I took my first pick 2 weeks ago and it's a Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I have a copy at home for a few years now, so it's time to actually read it.
I had the intention to start reading today but that didn't happen. And I have other books to finish first but I'll get to it this weekend 🙃

message 16: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (krystallee6363) I'm starting 2019 with The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay

It's a group read for another group and the first time I've actually done a group read with a group! Hooray!

Haven't done my jam jar but I have a list of books for jan/feb which I pick from randomly whenever I finish a book.

message 17: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 2 comments Happy New Year!

My first pick is Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa. I'm super excited that I picked this one first! I started listening to the audiobook for this one last year but I was having some issues following one of the narrators. I'm super happy to start physically reading this one!

Peter (peterdonnelly) | 8 comments From the 6 I placed in my January Jam Jar I had someone randomly select a number and I will, therefore, be reading The Wait for Shadows by Karl Holton, for my first book in this challenge.

The first one in the series was brilliant so really looking forward to this.

Dannii Elle (danniiellereads) Happy New Year, everyone :)

I'm starting off 219 by finishing up two reads I didn't quite complete in 2018: The Ember Blade and The Cabin at the End of the World. Once these are complete my first full 2019 read will be The Luminaries

message 26: by Jelena (new)

Jelena Milenković (kaliopi_ann) | 22 comments My first pick is Percy Jackson - The Lightning Thief and, surprise!, this is my very first time reading that series (fingers crossed I’m gonna like it as much as everyone apparently does). I’m also going to be reading Harry Potter for another book club, again after 10 long years, hopefully I’ll like it as much as my younger self!

Good luck on your reading, may they [chosen books] all be 4+ stars reads 💕

message 27: by Cait (new)

Cait | 24 comments My first pick was Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and I'm pretty excited about it. i didn't get a lot of reading done yesterday because my cat is sick (he's going to the vet this morning) but hopefully I'll get some more pages in later

Jelena, I've been encouraged by my HP fanatical family to read Harry Potter, which to my shame I've never read. It is the only book promise I've made for 2019 and I hope I enjoy as much as the films.

Loretta (Quixotic Reads) (quixoticreads) | 4 comments Howdy book friends! Happy New Year!!

I'm a total mood reader, so I picked several slips out of my jar to give myself options. The winners were Foolish Hearts , Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter , Shadow and Bone , and Roar . I just started reading Roar and it's super fun, I'm really loving it so far!

EDITS:

1/7/19 - Finished Roar!! It was a fun read, I loved it! Going to start Shadow and Bone next I think.

message 32: by Fefe (new)

Fefe | 18 comments I just started The Wicker King and it is such a quik read! I might be able to finish by the 5th with the rest of the readathon I'm doing to focus on the other books!

However, there are two books from 2018 (Northanger Abbey and The Girl of Fire and Thorns Stories) that I still have not finish. I hope I get to finish them with the rest of my TBR before my class starts again

message 33: by Megan (new)

Megan Polley (mpolley) | 3 comments I pulled Jacob's Room. I've just ordered it and plan to dive in this weekend.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

@Jelena I hope you enjoy Percy! I loved them and all the other books I've read by Rick Riordan since I finished Percy.

message 35: by Sam (new)

Sam (librarymouse81) Update so far for my Jan Jam Jar...I've finished 4 books already, and am about 20% through my fifth book. It has been great reading so far. Okay, fine, so my first three reads were volumes of manga, but they still count. My TBR mug has different colored slips for my various reading categories (manga, NetGalley, Big Books, and Random reads) so that is helpful when it comes to picking books according to my mood.

destiny ♡ howling libraries (howlinglibraries) | 363 comments Mod
I haven't finished anything yet, but I've DNFed 2 things. 😂 You Are Here and The Traitor Prince. There wasn't anything "wrong" with either of them, the writing in the former just wasn't for me, and the latter is one I might pick up again when I'm more in the mood for it. Moving on! I'm still working on my first jar pick, Darkest Hours, which is pretty good but not amazing so far.

message 37: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan | 12 comments My first choice was Book 3 of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Yes, i know I said that 2-5 but I managed to finish 2 before New Years. Next ones are book 4 and 5 from the series! I loved reading this series when I was in high school.

message 38: by ✨faith✨trust✨pixiedust✨ (last edited Jan 02, 2019 07:30PM) (new)

✨faith✨trust✨pixiedust✨ Dead Account; Not Coming Back (faithm99) I'm gonna start (once I'm done with my carryover books) with Evenfall by Gaja and Boris Kos and The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan (I read two books at once usually) so hyped for those!

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Whoooo! You go, guys! :D

I wanted to end 2018 with no current reads but I succeeded at not reading for an entire week - oooops - so I failed at that one, hah. Still need to finish those two books before I can officially start the January Jam Jar BUT I did pull two books from the jar already!

So, as soon as I've finished The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life and The Gilded Wolves, I'll be reading:
> To All the Boys I've Loved Before
> Godsgrave

I'm so stoked for those since they're way high up on my TBR!

But first.. those two current reads.. I'm halfway through The Gilded Wolves and a third through The Subtle Art so.. we'll see.

message 43: by Mimi (new)

Mimi (heymimi) I finished A Christmas Carol, and am currently halfway through From the Earth to the Moon.

I'll have to squeeze in The Horse and His Boy (wich wasn't on my janary list, but suddenly became available) before my next jam jar read Women Warriors: An Unexpected History.....

And need to finish Sheroes: Bold, Brash, and Absolutely Unabashed Superwomen from Susan B. Anthony to Xena which wasn't on the list either xD

message 44: by Dana (new)

Dana Cristiana (silvermoon1923) I have finished the 3 leftover books from December:

Sincerely, Harriet, Book Love and The Sheikh's Christmas Fling.

Now I can start with my jar pick --> Our Child of the Stars and Siena.

OMG I feel that ... I've got four 'currently reading' from last year and have still started another two XD

message 46: by Julia (new)

Julia V (juliarosev) | 6 comments I finished a hangover book from 2018 and read a shorter fantasy book. Time to dig in to my challenge! I selected The Fifth Season which is perfect because I have really been meaning to knock that one off. I just wish it wasn't such a long book for my first challenge haha.

I haven't read a lot of your picks. Time to go add them to my lists.

message 47: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor I just finished reading Neverworld Wake which was my first pick. It surprised me so much and was so much darker than I thought it would be! I really enjoyed it.

message 48: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor My next pick out of the jar is The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory! I am excited to read it.

message 49: by Cláudia (new)

Cláudia (claudiiia_1) | 3 comments Well, I first picked Angels & Demons which was a book I was interested in for a really long time, and was on my GR TBR pile since 2016, so I finally picked up, ended up giving it 3.5 stars, it was a bit disappointing for me.
Now I'm currently Reading Clockwork Angel and I'm loving it so much
