10.2 - Every Day Heroes
Read a book with a main character who is an everyday hero. For the purposes of this task, an everyday hero will be defined as first responders (firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, search and rescue personnel), park rangers, classroom teachers, social workers, lifeguards, nurses, doctors, and veterinarians.
Required: If the main character's profession is not obvious from the book's description, explain how it fits the task when you post.

Yes, nonfiction works.

Laura | 31 comments Um, for the police officer angle, would you be okay with a police commissioner? I'm thinking of reading one of Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano novels, but though GR says inspector, he's actually the higher ranking officer of his district.
I'm not sure that's 'everyday' enough?

EShay Fagan (eshay11) | 569 comments Can I use The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers?

Mister Rogers was definitely a teacher and a hero to me as a kid.

No, sorry. While Mr. Rogers was certainly influential, he was a television personality and an artist. For this task you're looking for a nonfiction or fictional depiction of a firefighter, police officer, EMT, paramedic, search and rescue person, park ranger, classroom teacher, social worker, lifeguard, nurse, doctor, or veterinarian. I'll clarify the language in the task to indicate we're looking for a classroom teacher for this task.

Katrina (katrinasreads) | 205 comments Hi, can I use A Spark of Light for this task, the book - it has a police hostage negotiator as one of its main characters?

Thanks in advance

A police hostage negotiator would work so as long as Hugh McElroy remains a main character throughout the story (and not just his daughter), the book will work.

I was also hoping to read this and was wondering if anyone has read the book and could confirm that Hugh McElroy remains the main character? (Hard to tell from book description!)

No, sorry. Classroom teachers only for this particular task.
