How Do I Do Things On Goodreads?

If you go into to book through your books in the app and change the exclusive shelf for your book to the "Currently Reading" shelf, Goodreads will add the current date as your start date. (For instance, I usually have the book on my "Checked Out" shelf, and I go into that shelf to pick the book and change it to "Currently Reading.") If you then go back to the front of your books page in the app (or just choose to update progress on the website) and select "I'm finished" in the upper left corner, Goodreads will add that current date as your finished date. It works fine as long as you remember to do the update on the day of, and it won't change the edition. (Source: This is how I get almost all my reading dates in, though I do sometimes forget and have to edit on the full website.)

In addition to what Ilona just said (which is new power user stuff to me - WOW Ilona!) when originally choosing the book for cover display, I always do the look up by ISBN instead of title. That way it will take you right to the edition you want instead of giving you all 10,000 covers for Alice in Wonderland or what have you.

Yes, there is a bug going on with the friens requests and Goodreads is aware of it.

Yes same here. An approved friend request is still popping up, and a friend request that I denied was actually added as a friend instead! According to multiple questions on the Help site they know there’s a bug and are working on it, example: https://help.goodreads.com/s/question...

Is this just me? Is it a known issue and if so, how do I fix it? I’m on the desktop (web) version. Thanks!

To create a link, use this format but change [ ] to < >:
[a href=URL LINK]TEXT[/a]
Please note that Goodreads does not allow you to embed outside links. I can link to a post within Goodreads using the link format, like this:
2025 Member Challenge Ideas
If you scroll down to the 2nd post within that thread, you'll see the below Google sheet URL that doesn't look clean and neat like the thread link.

Examples of other html tags allowed on Goodreads are under the (some html is ok) link at the top right of the comment box. You can click there to see how to add authors, covers, images, and formatting like bold, italic, etc.
Lastly, the above works when using your browser, not the Goodreads app, which has a lot of room for improvement.
Hope this helps!

For this one, I went to Goodreads' Help section. (To find Help, click on your profile image at the top right, then click Help near the bottom.) There's a New User FAQ on the main Help page, as well as a search box.
Searching "how do I switch book editions" directs to this answer.
The More editions area on the book page only shows 20 choices as you scroll to the right, but if your book has more than 20 editions, you can click directly under there to Show all xx editions. (My current read has 129 editions, but I've seen some with hundreds.)
When you add the book you're Currently Reading, you might consider entering its ISBN if you have a print copy in hand. 😊

If you mean how to add a book to your 2025 Goodreads challenge, you'll change the book's status from Want to Read, to Currently Reading, to Read and make sure to include the date you finished. If the Read date is in 2025, it will count toward the 2025 Goodreads Challenge.
Hope this helps!

Yes, the website is better if you want to use more features. However, the new Beta format also seems to be lacking certain things I think, but I can see that's a much better format for a phone. A confirmed Luddite, I use a desktop for email and Goodreads and still only have a talk and text plan, although those seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. I like the freedom of not being in constant contact, etc, and even carrying a cellphone feels like an invasion of that some days.
