I see Lawrence W something like Ryan Gosling

and then Randy I picture similar but plumper in the cheeks. Like I imagine he eats a lot of pizza and burgers as he works at those computers.

As for Thanksgiving, we don't have it here so no issues. But I hope you will have a great holiday weekend. Somebody else cooking sounds good to me!

Rosemary From the long chapter:

"Shaftoe's never felt better. What a f**king deal! He's getting morphine out of the Germans in exchange for telling them German military secrets."

It sounds like Bischoff is the kind of crazy U-boat captain who could just about save them from getting sunk, even though both sides are now trying to destroy them. I hope they make it. I'm not sure how I would face a whole half of this book without the double-act of Shaftoe and Root :)

Marie | 83 comments Robert Patterson would be my first choice for Lawrence. I don’t even remember a description of what he looks like, but that is kind of how I would picture him.

This may sound crazy, but my first choice for randy would be jack black. I don’t know how the two could even be related, but I can’t help picturing him looking like jack black in a more serious role.

I guess my second choice for randy would be Jacob Benjamin when he has a beard.

Marie | 83 comments For thanksgiving this year, I am just doing something simple and resting for the most part. I have decided that this holiday season, I am going to do all the things I would like to do all year long but don’t make the time for.

So I am going to make banana cake with cream cheese from scratch for desert and we are going to have steak with sauce they serve in teppanyaki restaurants that I love. No turkey this year or anything that I would do for the sake of tradition.

That is my cooking plans this year so I don’t think it will affect my reading but there is a reason I don’t cook cake from scratch at any other time of the year—because of how much time it takes. So I guess we will see.

Linda | 1425 comments I got only a short chapter read yesterday before we went to my brother’s house for Thanksgiving. Now today is a relaxing day of getting caught up in my reading. :)

I like the choice of Ryan Gosling for playing Lawrence. My other pick would be Alexander Skarsgard, although he is Swedish so I’m not sure how well he can play an American accent, but that is how I picture Lawrence.

For Randy, I picture him as Nick Offerman. The photo on his Wikipedia page from May 2018 looks like a perfect fit. He looks serious but with an underlying current of deviousness.

I also liked when Lawrence told Elmer to stop shouting. But my favorite passage was right before that...

Just moments ago, Waterhouse was thinking about how very British this whole scene was, feeling very far from home, and wishing that one or two Americans could be present. Now that his wish has come true, he just wants to crawl out of the Mansion on his hands and knees.

Linda | 1425 comments I’m fully caught up now. The quotes that Rosemary and Lorna pulled about Shaftoe and Root were both ones that I marked as well. Both had me smiling. :)

Lorna, I totally laughed at your comment about Goto being one who needs to go out and buy a lottery ticket! So true! It’s unreal how he had been living there among the villagers for 6 months. And also to have been the only survivor from both the swim in from the sea and then also from among the troops who slaughtered the villagers and their subsequent trek to the beach.

I’m curious who it was that apparently escaped the sunken u-boat that Doug and Amy found. I’m wondering if it is somehow going to be Shaftoe and Root, although they are currently on the other side of the world.

Oh yes, he and Ryan Gosling look related!

I imagine him looking a lot younger than that. He'd have to be 20 years younger for my idea of him! But then he would fit.

Or yes, Jack Black when young. In fact those two look a lot alike, too :)
