For me it only shows up on the actual page and not the phone app.

message 102: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments yeah - i don't think ou can see it on the app - the app is actually really limited in what you can see

message 103: by Emurphy (new)

Emurphy | 851 comments Ok, thank you. I will check on the site!

message 104: by Pia (new)

Pia I have another question, I've seen that people check something called the AR info for verifying some books.

What is it for? Do we have to verify books there? So far I've only checked the books I want to read here on Goodreads

message 105: by kiki (new)

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments i've seen posted in a couple of places that there are 51 tasks this season. i'm only counting 50, what am i missing?

ten 5 pointers
ten 10 pointers
ten 15 pointers
ten 20 pointers
seven 25 pointers
three 30 pointers

is there another 25 pointer or 30 pointer i'm missing? i appreciate the help! :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments There is a 50 point task at midpoint

message 107: by Vi (new)

Vi | 184 comments The 50 point task will be posted midway of the season. That is the 51st task.

Thanks for the confirmation, Susan.

message 109: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Where do we go to post what we've read, in order to get our points? There are SO MANY boards, it's hard to make heads or tails of some of this.

You only need to verify the AR for books which are shelved under "childrens" or "kids" on their main page. This link to the rules is helpful. Book formats -rule #4.

message 112: by Pia (new)

Pia Got it. Thanks!

message 113: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments Gemma - I just post what my should-be total is, assuming my last post was ok - and then adjust if I end up on the wall of shame

message 114: by Tara (new)

Tara | 391 comments If we have received verification for a specific task (or ebook only verification), how do Ilink to that verification? I've seen some people just put "approved in message xyz", and others have put "Approved Here" and it links to the approval. I was able to figure out how to do the link (mostly) but wasn't sure if there was a way to link to the actual approval number (i.e. message #1234) rather than just the link to the main thread and then still need to put message #1234.

Any thoughts from anyone? Is there a thread with common html codes that can be used? Thanks.

message 115: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments When you go to the page, find your comment. On the top gray bar where your name is, on the right side it shows the time you posted (for example right now your comment says Message 120: by Tara Jo..............9 minutes ago). Click on the time (9 minutes ago) and that will take you to the same page but with your comment as the start point. So once you click on the time, copy the URL that it takes you to and insert that into the "how to make a link" code. When the person clicks on your word "here" or "message 1234" it will then go directly to your comment, instead of just the general page.

Hopefully that made sense!

message 116: by Tara (new)

Tara | 391 comments Cool...I will give that a try next time...it made perfect sense! Thanks Cait!

message 117: by Bea (new)

Bea Thanks, Cait, for me also. I had not understood how to do that before and could only post the link to the page, not the message!

message 118: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments A faster way to do that is to right click on the "9 minutes ago [or whatever time]" link. Most browsers have a Copy Link item in the right click menu. In Firefox, it is "Copy Link Location." Then just paste wherever you need the URL.

message 119: by kiki (new)

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments oh duh, totally forgot about the midpoint task. thanks, all! :)

message 120: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments yeah, i'm too lazy to link - I just put post number ;)

message 121: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 613 comments Is there any special rule about cookery books?

message 122: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments No, they can be read as regular books, as long as they meet the regular requirements (100+ pages, not all pictures with very little text, etc.)

message 123: by Pia (new)

Pia I've seen that some books that are definitely not for children have been shelved by a few users under "children" in the main page genre.

As these books won't appear on the AR website, what happens?

Do we have to ask a mod for approval or are they out?

message 124: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments if they have children shelved and aren't on the AR website - you can't use them - it helps to pay attention - if the children genre drops off, you can get them verified as not having children

message 125: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments its like because they feature children in the storyline in some way shape or form

message 126: by Pia (new)

Pia Got it, thanks Dee!

message 127: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments A question about verification for genre/task approval, etc:

If I'm seeking to use a book for a task, and find in the verification thread that another user has had the title verified for genre or appropriateness, can I use the approval comment from the previous user or do I need to post the title again to get verification for myself?

message 128: by Bea (new)

Bea Melissa, you can use the verification already given.

message 129: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments Thanks Bea :)

message 130: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Morgan Newbie here. Tried to figure this out but....
I see posts with the point totals added up, and others with them not listed. Am I supposed to do this on my posts?

Also, when I go to the readerboard I see my reader name there, Deborah M, but when I go to the page where the total points are, I am not there. Am I supposed to add to this page? or do the moderators do all of the point keeping?

Loved finding this challenge and I have shared it with three others who are doing this....we are all middle school teachers and having fun with this.

message 131: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments all the moderators do the point keeping - but they will typically update in groups of 50, so it could be that they haven't updated the readerboard to include your post yet

some people add points up, others don't- that is more of a personal perference I think - personally, I like tracking

Thank you. Do I need to repost those with me reader board name?

message 134: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments yes - you need to repost with your readerboard name and make sure you include links for all the books you claim

message 135: by Miguel (new)

Miguel Pimenta So... im new here (therefore, sorry if this is not the right place to ask these kind of questions). But could you tell what are "the good read's author" and the "big book" about"?
Thanks

message 136: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments a big book (for the purpose of the challenge) is one that is over 500pgs - you can claim tickets for these big books, and get put into a drawing at the end of the challenge to create a task in the next season

goodreads authors - are ones that have (goodreads author) in grey after their name on the book profile pg - similar to big books, you can claim these, and be entered for a chance to create a task next season

Nicola | 1360 comments Hi, I haven't seem this written down anywhere but I noticed that the rules talk about 'creating the new 5, 10 and 15 point tasks'. Does that mean that halfway through the challenge all of those current tasks will be wiped and we will have an entire new lot of tasks? So, to get full points (hah, yeah right...) you would need to complete all of the 5, 10 and 15 point tasks twice?

message 138: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments this is for next seasons tasks - so in December when the new season starts - the themes, which people are nomianting right now, will be used as a basis for the tasks

Have no fear, the 5,10 and 15 points task stay as they are for the Fall Challenge. The only task that will be added for the Fall Challenge is the 50-point task, that will be created by the member who has the most points at the middle of the Challange (15 October) and has not already created a challenge for the Season.

Two weeks before the end of a challenge the moderators post the new 5, 10 and 15 points task for the next season challenge, so you can already start to plan at this point. But these then only count for the Winter Challenge and you can only start reading for these tasks with the start of the Winter Challenge on 01 DEC.

message 140: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments Out of curiosity, can you be chosen to make a task the same way twice? For example, if in Spring 2015 I'm chosen through Goodreads Author tickets, could I be chosen that way again another time or is it a one time thing?

Some of the 20 point tasks are one-time only- like Seasoned Reader. The limiters are included in Rewards of the Challenge
You can be chosen for 20.4 and 20.5 more than once.

message 143: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 1360 comments Oh right :-) That makes sense.

message 144: by Tara (new)

Tara | 391 comments Is there a list of "suggested/standard" bookshelves to create when shelving your books? When I started using GR, I just made up what worked for me, but didn't realize it could potentially be used by others (for challenges, etc). Just curious if there is a way others have found to best organize/arrange the shelves that helps both themselves and others? Thanks in advance.

message 145: by Lindsey (last edited Sep 16, 2014 09:45AM) (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments If you go to a genre page and scroll down to the "Tags" section on the right, you will see what bookshelves contribute to a genre on GR. Classics, for example - https://www.goodreads.com/genres/clas... - classics, classic, genre__classics, klasyka, lektury-klasyka, the-classics, and классика

And Children's - childrens, childhood, childhood-books, childhood-favorites, childhood-reads, children, children-books, children-s, children-s-books, children-s-fiction, children-s-lit, children-s-literature, children-ya, childrens-books, childrens-fiction, childrens-lit, childrens-ya, childrensbooks, dzieciństwo, genre__childrens_general_fiction, infanzia, kiddie, kiddielit, kidlit, kids, kids-books, książki-z-dzieciństwa, little-kids-books, and medium-kids-books

That's the only place I've seen where you can see what contributes to a genre. I think the GR team ultimately decides what shelves contribute to what genres. I'm not sure if there's a master list anywhere.

message 146: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments initially when they launched the genres it was a free for all, and librarians (any) could combine genres together - so you'd see like sci-fi; sf; science fiction etc merged together

until someone had the bright idea to merge all romance novels into porn - and it took a good month for it to be straightened out - so now the merging of genres can only be done by super-librarians

Thanks....that's a great start!

message 148: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments make a new post - never edit...just because the readerboard hasn't been updated (normally they do every 50 posts or so) - doesn't mean your task hasn't been reviewed...

so new post, work under the assumption that there were no errors with your last task when it comes to calculating points

message 149: by Lindsey (last edited Sep 18, 2014 09:01AM) (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments As Dee said, keep making posts and assume your posts were correct. We have no way of knowing when the moderators see our post and update their own records, so you definitely don't want to edit (unless it's within a few seconds of posting), as they probably won't see the changes you made. They update the readerboard after they have gone through the new completed task posts and have recorded it in their private records. When you check the readerboard, note what post number it was updated to "READERBOARD (through post 800)" If your point total up to that post does not match what's on the readerboard, then you should check the Completed Tasks Questions/Problems thread for any issues with your posts - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... If there are any problems with one of your posts, you will be asked to re-post the task correctly (and NOT edit or delete the problem post :)).

Using the example above, say your 5.1 post was #789, and your 5.2 post was #802. The current readerboard would show your score as 5 points less than your records. When the readerboard gets updated again through post #850, another 5 points should show up for you for 5.2.

Hope that helps!

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 498 comments Always good to ask questions to clear things up and prevent problems! It does take a while to really understand everything about the challenge, but eventually it will seem simple for the most part.
