Jeannette Katzir | 6 comments "The Contest" by Nora Katzir
When BETH was dared by her friends to make an entry in a hypothetical contest about how to kill her cheating husband JOHN, without getting caught, the words that spilled out of her mouth were; “Bury him in a speed bump!”

After her friends stopped cheering, they shared their own methods; poisoning his toothpaste, pushing him out of a hot air balloon, and . . . . . It appears the game to lighten her misery was a success.

But when John ends up dead as a result of one of the contest entries, this comedic band-aid stopped being humorous and causes all fingers to point toward Beth. She and her three equestrian loving friends, JESSICA, NINA AND LAURI, embark on a mission to prove her innocence. Even though they believe she is guilty.

Things appear bleak for Beth until a letter from a surprise eyewitness is delivered to the Malibu Police station. The new information leads DETECTIVE SPENCER to the house of SHEILA, John’s lover. The drugs used in the murder are discovered, and Sheila is arrested tried and convicted of the crime. But is she the one who really did it?

Rita Chapman | 566 comments The Poinciana Tree

This story is set around the beautiful Poinciana tree, with its amazing red flowers.
Suzanne Matthews arrives home from work to find the kitchen in disarray and her daughter missing. After searching the house, her eyes turn towards the garden, drawn to the Poinciana tree. Underneath its canopy she sees her daughter, slumped against its trunk.
When the police are unable to identify Jennifer’s killer, they turn their attention to her husband, Mark. Whilst trying to cope with her grief, she finds herself fighting to prove her husband’s innocence, as her world is turned upside down. She is inspired by another woman, who went with her husband to the Sudan as medical volunteers for a charity organisation.
A tale of raw emotion, desperation and acceptance.

Leslie | 13 comments Choosing Life: My Father’s Journey in Film from Hollywood to Hiroshima

I am excited to share that my nonfiction account of my family's deep ties to Hiroshima is FREE on Kindle for a short time. This year is not only the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings, but also the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The stark choice between death and life, war and peace, has been before us all these years, but it has never been more urgent than now.

The United Nations has declared September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Choosing Life is meant to help people understand the real stakes of nuclear weapons and make the right choice for life and peace for us all.

SO in honor of the UN’s anniversary and its day to eliminate nuclear weapons, Choosing Life will be FREE this week on Amazon Kindle! (You don’t need to own a Kindle device as you can read on your computer with the free Kindle app.) The zero price will be available now to September 30! Enjoy and tell your friends! I have two books self-published in my "Glory: A Civil War Series" and soon-to-be a third. The first two are:

Sweet Glory

Train to Glory

Both include mystery/suspense, adventure, romance, and drama true to the times (some happy, some sobering). In Sweet Glory, my primary protagonist, Jana Brady, plays a woman soldier, nurse, and spy; in Train to Glory, she's asked by suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to travel their lecture circuit speaking about her time in uniform to prove: Women ought to be granted the same rights to tackle anything a man can if they have a mind to it. Although the third book in the series (Gold, Guts and Glory) is soon-to-be published, the plot spins its own legend of lost Union treasuries and continues with Jana Brady hunting for it by request of President Andrew Johnson.

Yep, I keep finding typos (so does my mum!) along with "ugh, that's not a great sentence by any means..." despite several reads, re-reads, re-uploads and so on. That said, I read the first paragraph of a very famous book recently and thought to myself, "if that was me I wouldn't have said ...and...and....and...and" the way the author did - but, it sold millions, so what the heck do I know! As a friend of mine once said, "A good story will carry bad writing." I hope he's right.

Diane Johnson | 52 comments I am an indie author, and you can find my three horror/thriller novels in the links:
The Schoharie The Schoharie by Diane M. Johnson The Schoharie is about a bridge collapse in a rural community that unleashes a Native spirit seeking vengeance.

The Perfect Prophet series Perfect Prophet by Diane M. Johnson Prophet Reborn by Diane M. Johnson Perfect Prophet is about a death metal atheist mistaken for a dangerous prophet, and the Satanist who wants to kill him.

So, those are my books. But this thread alludes to indie books I’m reading or have read? So here are a few recommendations:

I’m currently reading Grave Robbers Wanted, No Experience Necessary Graverobbers Wanted No Experience Necessary (Andrew Mayhem #1) by Jeff Strand . It’s too soon for me to rate it, but I’m enjoying it so far.

Here are a few other titles I’ve enjoyed:
Duckett & Dyer Dicks For Hire by G.M. Nair Duckett Dyer: Dicks For Hire (sci-fi/fantasy comedy)
Bayou City Burning (Harry and Dizzy Lark #1) by D.B. Borton Bayou City Burning (father/daughter period detective drama)
Blood of My Enemies Short Stories 2 Short Stories to Chill, Thrill and Make You Think Someone Is Watching You by Nanci Arvizu Blood of My Enemies (Dark inspired short stories)
Affinity's Window by Douglas L. Wilson Affinity’s Window (paranormal horror/thriller)

I also recently finished The Only Good Indians The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones - A highly recommended horror read, but I’m not sure if that one qualifies as an Indie anymore.

Michael Scharen | 147 comments Hello,
My name is Michael J. Scharen and I am a self-published new author. I only began writing early in 2020.
I write science fiction from a voluntaryist/agorist perspective. Early reviews say in the classic tradition of Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, and Kim Stanley Robinson.

My books, in the order they were written are

Sol is Not Lost
For the Ages

The Van Leeuwan Trilogy (prequel to the above)
The Gifted
The Serendipity Factor
Treason

Books may be read as stand alone novels, though more could be gleaned from the Trilogy by reading them in order.

I wrote the books, learned Sigil to create .epubs and .mobi formats, then learned Audacity to record and edit the audio versions.
I then went through several iterations of my website in rapid succession to the current one at michaelsbookcorner.com. I've learned a lot more about Javascript, CSS, and HTML in the bargain, though its been a hard slog. I get to have a website not dependent on plugins and themes created by others. Soon, the new shopping cart will be in the offing to make things even easier for customers.
Learning VSDC I created the book trailers for goodreads.com, my website, and YouTube.

I don't sell on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble, but only on my website where I take a variety of crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero, and Dogecoin.

Goodreads.com is wonderful place to exchange ideas and even reviews with others or to discuss the far more esoteric topics we come up with.

I hope to have many interesting exchanges with others here in the near an distant future.

Best Regards,

Michael J. Scharen
