Pink | 5491 comments A-Z Author Challenge 2019

The challenge is to read 26 books, by 26 different authors, one for each letter of the alphabet.

The books can be any genre or publication date and you may use the author's first name or surname (and I guess middle name if you're really struggling!)

Only books read between January 1st - December 31st 2019 can be included.

This challenge can be used in conjunction with all of our other challenges. So you can double up and use the same book for as many as you like! I hope you'll all join us for another year of A-Z!

NOTE: When posting advancements on your challenge, please copy and re-post your original selections with your changes or post the original message number so interested members can follow your progress.

Victor *Nothing Happened* Matt wrote: "Wow! Very impressive list Victor! Good luck!"

Thanks, Matt. When compiling this list I wanted the titles to be predominantly classics and near-permanent residents on my TBR. Over 500 pages or a book that I own a physical copy of were pluses but not requirements. I ended up with more books than letters :) Always a good thing.

I didn't participate much in reading challenges this year, so I hope to make up for it by completing this one. Having said that, if Watership Down is the only book I read for this challenge, I would consider it a success as I have been trying to read this book for over 40 years. I've started this story many times never getting to page 100 (more like 50) :(

Kyle (kyleezer) A question: Should the books be read in order from A to Z, or do you just try and fill in all of the letters in any order, by the end of the year? Thanks!

I've been trying to read Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian for several months. I am calling it quits -- I tried, but these rambling thoughts type of books are not for me. I also hate that all people are just scenery for his life. I really felt that his portrayal of women as just objects was offensive. Just my opinion -- keep in mind this book won the Nobel Prize for the author and has high rating. Just not my cup of tea. I'm still counting it, as I spent several months reading the book while I could have read something else.

Glad you are having a good reading year. And good luck on all of your challenges, Matt.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 157 comments I had forgotten that I'd started this, so I went back and edited above to fill in three spots. Still looking for the tough ones--QXYZ--though I would have thought I'd have found something for the Y by now.

Not all picks were great - sometimes when you just need to finish a letter you hit some poorer choices... (U...)

Technically nobel prizes are for the entire authorship, not a specific book - but I totally agree with you... I tried to get through his collection of stories Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather but I just couldn't - I was both bored and annoyed!

I ended up reading a Shanghai crime novel Qiu Xiaolong Death of a Red Heroine

I won't be finishing this year either, Matt. But I agree, it has been fun.
