I'm gradually making my way through the chapters of a book (my second) that I plan to release this fall—probably December. I've been working with an editor from Little, Brown—we're doing round 1 of the copy editing process, but I like to make changes and to do a second copy edit round with a second editor.
The Book is called "The Balance". It's a YA novel I first wrote in 2011 set in the future—200 years after a global thermonuclear war. Phoebe (the main character) lives in The Land, a fairly dystopian society ruled by The Council of God. She is one of the the end products of a 2+ century long genetic engineering program called "Future Man" (gender neutral in this case) and has to hide what she is, or face execution.
If you would like to see if the book interests you, the first group of chapters in what I call level 3 (or Rev 3) maturity are posted now—I've been posting a chapter / month as I revise. The main page where the chapters are posted also contains a rough draft of an introduction to the book.
I'd be interested in hearing comments on the character(s) and the plot. Just as a warning, while the book does have some action in it, the story doesn't focus on action and violence.
I'd be interested in your initial comments on the feel and tone of the story as well as the plot and characters. I'll be going back through the chapters to bring the writing quality up to level 5 before publishing an can make adjustments based on feedback, prior to that. In particular, I'm interested in readers who usually read YA books, especially if you're YA since all of my test readers to date have been people closer to my own age. I read YA and virtually every genre, but many of my past test readers do not.
