Melanie | 9 comments I've seen The Rosie Project (Graeme Simsion) mentioned for the "book becoming a movie in 2019" prompt. Is there any other prompt it could fit?

Mikaela (mikaelareads) | 19 comments If anyone has read Transcription by Kate Atkinson do you have any ideas for what prompts it could align with? I was thinking amateur detective, but I'm not sold on that.

Fatima (fatimajaveed) where would Coraline fit in ?

message 204: by Miri (new)

Miri (miriloves2read) | 28 comments Fatima wrote: "where would Coraline fit in ?"

I'd definitely say "a book about a family" and depending on your personal opinion "a reread of a favourite book" or "a book that makes you nostalgic"

Laura Z | 385 comments Has anyone read One Day in Decemberby Josie Silver? I don't really want to put it with multiple POVs (there were only two) or with a book I'd like to see made into a movie (I think it would be too difficult to show the passage of time and the change in relationships)... So unusual chapter headings? The sections aren't numbered like chapters. They're headed by dates and then by characters. Any other suggestions?

This one is about a family. The family "secret" that runs through the entire novel ties them together.

A book you think should be turned into a movie.
A book about someone with a superpower.
A book featuring an extinct or imaginary creature.

Jesse Cinquegrano | 2 comments I had started reading Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions before I decided to do this challenge (but still in January!) wanted to see where it could possibly fit in. I am thinking maybe the prompt where it inspired a common phrase or idiom... although General Mills I’m sure is the one who actually started the phrase... thoughts?

Yeah I'm guessing "Breakfast of Champions" was already a common breakfast cereal slogan, but ... Is that book maybe where "Kilgore Trout was here" came from? I was never clear if that was a common phrase before the book or if the book inspired it. I know this phrase has fallen in popularity, because I just ran a Google image search and can't even find it, but at one time (in the 70s and 80s in the US, or at least in the NYC area) it was very common graffiti.

Does it take place in a single day? I remember a lot of introspection and flashbacks, but does the actual story take place in a single day?

If you want to think outside the box a bit, it could be considered a superpower to be able to make your ficitional characters real.

And, if you want to think more outside the box, the Supernatural episode "The Monster at the End of this Book" discusses this book, though not by name and nobody is actually reading it.

message 212: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 127 comments I just finished You but I'm unsure if it's okay to use for the wedding prompt (got it at 40 for now) - there's a wedding reception happening in the background while (view spoiler) they could hear various songs playing from the venue. would you say that counts?

message 213: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 19 comments Just started So Close to Being the S***, Y'all Don't Even Know by Retta... would this fit anywhere?

As a side note - do autobiographies count as "own voices" books?

Thanks in advance!

Devon (dkdk) | 59 comments Stephanie wrote: "Just started So Close to Being the S***, Y'all Don't Even Know by Retta... would this fit anywhere?

It's bending the prompts a bit, but here are some ways it could fit:
"A book about a hobby:" she talks about a few different things that are hobby-like (purse-shopping, obsession with Hamilton, and working out, from what I remember).
"A book with an item of clothing on the cover:" her dress figures pretty prominently on the cover.

And if you really want to bend the prompts, it could be "a book that has inspired a common phrase" since she goes into detail about "Treat Yo Self" becoming a huge thing.

Despina (tosodoula) | 24 comments Where would Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End fit? My Dad gave it to me as a gift and I want to read it in 2019!

☕️Hélène⚜️ (pawstoodream) For the 32 book written by an author from Asia,Africa or South America! does this book for in: COPPER SUN by Sharon m. Draper!

message 217: by Nicki (new)

Nicki (spikedorchid) | 6 comments Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty?

message 218: by Christina (new)

Christina (chrissy__) | 127 comments Big Little Lies definitely works for multiple POVs, and I guess also for the family prompt (technically it's about more than just one family but that shouldn't matter, right?)

also for a past Popsugar category: I read this book for the Popsugar challenge when a category was "antonyms in the title" (I guess that was 2015?)

If you look up the author's goodreads profile it says he's from Singapore as well, so it could fit the "Author from Asia, Africa, or South America" prompt. :)

Heather (heatherbowman) | 904 comments Aly wrote: "I'm currently reading Crazy Rich Asians. Can y'all think of a prompt this might fulfill?

The author is Kevin Kwan, so it would work for "author whose first and last name start with the same letter." Depending on the cover, it might have an item of clothing or an accessory on it. I think this might have been his debut novel too.

Samantha (bookstasamm) | 182 comments Aly wrote: "I'm currently reading Crazy Rich Asians. Can y'all think of a prompt this might fulfill?

It's also about a family so would work for that prompt as well. I used it for a book I meant to read in 2018.

message 225: by Darci (new)

Darci Day | 164 comments Karen wrote: "Any thoughts on what to put Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang should fit?"

Just going by the description, it looks like it would fit in debut novel, a person with superpowers, and possibly a story told from different POVs.

message 226: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyexiled) | 16 comments This feels like cheating because it was such a fun, easy read! But I just finished The Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up: A Magical Story by Marie Kondo and I would love to squeeze it in somewhere.

It definitely fits in "A book author from Asia, Africa, or South America" - but I have another book in mind for that one. Would "A book about someone with a superpower" be bending the rules too much? (Tidying IS a superpower to me!) Or could tidying be a "hobby"? Hmm...

Miri (miriloves2read) | 28 comments Stephanie wrote: "I need to find a spot for Voyager as I am hooked! Can I get away with A novel based on a true story as it is historical fiction?"

"Based on a true story" wouldn't work for me, but that's just my personal feeling. You could definitely do "multiple characters POV's".
I guess "about someone with a superpower" would also kind of work, because not everybody is able to use the standing stones for time travelling. And if I remember correctly, there is a wedding as well! Maybe one of the other prompts works for you :)

message 229: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 17 comments Thanks for your suggestions Miriam. I think I’ll go with multiple POVs. 😊

Sarah Walker (sahara910) | 14 comments Hi, I had earmarked a couple books for categories where I chose something else but I still have the books. I'm wondering if they fit in another before I move them off. I already filled a Book that takes place in 24 Hours with Last Night at the Lobster & A Debut Novel with The Curious Case of Arthur Pepper

They are:

Tell the Wolves I'm Home
Goodbye, Vitamin
Lilac Girls

Thank you :)

Yes, Lilac Girls was based on a true story. I looked it up after reading it because I'm a nerd like that! Also (obviously) it fits two word title and I think it would make a good movie.

If you are okay with a loose interpretation of Scandinavia. They speak Finnish as one of their main languages and some experts think that it should be considered part.

I haven't read it yet either but it would also work for multiple prompts:
19. multiple chaaracher POVs
25. A debut novel
31. Book about a family
32. Book written by an author from Asia
34. book that includes a wedding
35. Book by an author whose first and last names start with the same letter

That's a good book, but it doesn't fit very well in this challenge!

- should be turned into a movie
- meant to read last year?
- clothing on the cover (well, her dress is quite prominent anyway)
- past category (there's ALWAYS a past category that works! in 2015 there was "includes a love triangle," and that would fit perfectly)
- revolving around a puzzle or game (this is weak, admittedly, but (a) there is much political intrigue and strategy, so that's sort of a game, and (b) there is a tile-based strategy game that they play a lot in the book)

@Samantha. Perhaps a book you meant to read in 2018? (#9) Or you could find a prompt from a past Popsugar challenge that it fits. (#40) It’s been so long since I read it, is it told from multiple POVs?

Patricia | 49 comments I wanted to read In the Country We Love: My Family Divided . I looked up what an "Own Voices" book is, and all the definitions I could find say the book is a novel, and this is autobiographical. I personally think it could fit into this category. Does anyone know the parameters for "Own Voices" and whether it is by definition fiction?
