Edie | 1145 comments Excited to begin this. All my books are from the library, so I can cover that, if need be. I have a non-fiction book that I will try to finish for this.

message 3: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Hi Edie, me too! I’m reading a book set in North Dakota so I’ve got number 10. I’ll look at the challenges more thoroughly tomorrow to see what else I can cover. Maybe others will have checked in by then.

Go Team 1! LOL

message 4: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I'm excited!

I have a graphic novel I can read. I also have a couple of new authors. These are the books I was planning on:

Gone Rogue - graphic novel
A Christmas Carol
The Girl in the Ice
Eversea

Most of them are blue covers as well.

message 5: by Veronica (last edited Dec 21, 2018 10:44PM) (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Excited to get this started! I'm in the middle of Jane Eyre, which is set in England and I live in the United States so that can be used for 18.

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Just a heads up that prompt 7 has been corrected to: Read a book with a character born after 2000 (child main character)

message 7: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments Hi team! I’m starting We’ll Never Be Apart, which can count for the protagonist born after 2000 I think. She is 17 and the book was published this year. Or new author.

I can also read my 3 children’s books today. Not sure how much reading I’ll get done over there the holidays though. I’m having a bit of a songwriting phase so spending more of my free time on that rather than reading.

message 8: by Diana (new)

Diana (dianapharah) | 49 comments Super excited to start this! I’ve been in a slight reading slump due to finals but this readathon will hopefully help me finish the year strong.

message 9: by Diana (last edited Dec 22, 2018 06:59AM) (new)

Diana (dianapharah) | 49 comments I made a new copy of Emily's amazing spreadsheet and updated it for our use! This way we can upload all our books that fit for each prompt.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 10: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1145 comments Reading The Great Gatsby which would fit for #5 "reject" prompt. Book made into a movie. Thanks for posting the spreadsheet Diana.

message 11: by redatt (new)

redatt (mini_sagas) | 66 comments How do, team!

I started this morning with a book I borrowed from the library yesterday, 'Ashfall' by Mike Mullin (almost finished) after that I'll probably finish one of the several books I've already started.

Qu: do we actually have to be tacking part in ATY2018 to do item 22 or can we count books that meet one of the challenges anyway?

message 12: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I’m fine with people reading books that would count for a prompt, even if they aren’t technically counting it as part of their personal challenge. Especially since many are finished with the challenge.

Keep in mind that the read-a-thon goes until the 1st so there’s potential for counting a book for the 2019 challenge. If you finish it on the 1st :)

message 13: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1145 comments Thanks for the clarification, Laura. I will relook at my books to see if any of them fit prompts. Also, I hadn't thought about having this go through January 1, so I could read something I have been putting off reading until the new year.

message 14: by Tabitha (last edited Dec 22, 2018 12:08PM) (new)

Tabitha | 38 comments I'm currently reading:
-Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which works for 7 or 23
-Methuselah which works for 8 or 23
-The Solace of Water which works for 4 or 23
-The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness which works for 8, 11, 12, 20, or 23
-Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History which works for 11, 12, 20, or 23

I know some of these tasks have already been covered so the pages read from the books will count for tasks 1, 6, and 9.
I'm also listening to the audiobook of Maybe Someday which is 10 hours and 40 minutes long so that will count for my hours for tasks 14 and 15.

message 15: by Edie (last edited Dec 22, 2018 02:52PM) (new)

Edie | 1145 comments Completed The Great Gatsby . Will use this for #5 a rejected prompt. (book made into a movie) It has a blue cover, but it looks like someone else can check that box.

This can also count as a ATY challenge book (book with A,T,Y in the title). 111 pages of this were read today and can count for the readathon.

Recorded on Diana's spreadsheet.

message 16: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I read 3 children’s books today:Baby Loves Quantum Physics, Sheep in a Shop, and Chu’s Day at the Beach.

message 17: by Mindy (last edited Dec 23, 2018 09:40AM) (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Off to a great start, thanks everybody! Diana, thanks for copying the spreadsheet for us.

We have a number of categories covered or pending. We still need:

Read a book with snow or ice on the cover

Read a book with S-N-O-W in the title

Read a book with a beautiful cover (pretty subjective so shouldn't be too hard. haha)

message 18: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I completed #16. I read Gone Rogue today.

324 pages total for today.

I think The Girl in the Ice would count for snow and ice on the cover. There is ice on her face. Let me know if you agree.

Are we highlighting the completed prompts to differentiate them?

message 19: by Diana (new)

Diana (dianapharah) | 49 comments The blue coloring indicates uncompleted books while normal black is completed (as according to Emily’s notes on the bottom).

message 20: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I’m also reading How to Survive in a Science Fiction Universe, which would count for S-N-O-W

message 21: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Mindy, let me know which squares your team completed on Saturday and I can update your board.

I know you have the spreadsheet but I don't want to assume anything.

message 22: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1274 comments Hi everyone. I'm excited for the read a thon but will be reading less than usual since I'm visiting family for the holidays. I'm reading a non - fiction book set in another country that's from a library, so any of those prompts are still open when I finish, we can slot it in.

I did read a picture book yesterday.

message 23: by redatt (new)

redatt (mini_sagas) | 66 comments Yesterday I read my library book, Ashfall, and some of Mortal Engines. 503 pages in total.

message 24: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Laura, do you want me to post updates here or should I send you a message? Or something else?

message 25: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
You’re fine to just comment here. Usually leaders just say “we cleared #x and #x”

message 26: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1145 comments Good Morning Team,

It looks like we should have several squares uncovered. What a great start!

Finished all we ever wanted this morning. One of its main characters is a teenager which covers #7 "main character born after 2000" It also can count for a ATY prompt... book published in 2018. It adds 278 pages to my page count. I have recorded those in the spreadsheet.

Now I really need to get to wrapping presents!

message 27: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1145 comments Mindy,

Would it help if we yellow highlighted squares on the grid when a task has been completed?

message 28: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Joan, yes, totally agree for Girl in the Ice, thank you.

Laura, I've confirmed that as of this writing, Team 1 has completed tasks 4, 5, 7, 11, 16, and 21.

message 29: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Hi Edie,

I think I can keep track okay with the blue vs black text, but I'm not opposed to highlighting if that's helpful to others. :-) Thanks!

message 30: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 697 comments I completely forgot the start of the read-a-thon 😳
I will have more time to read starting tuesday, will be in the car to competitions on 4 days.

message 31: by Tabitha (last edited Dec 23, 2018 08:20PM) (new)

Tabitha | 38 comments I completed Maybe Someday 10 hours and 40 minutes audiobook
I finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 197 pages
I also completed the Kickoff and the Grinch Book Tag games for task 17.

message 32: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Great, Tabitha. I've added your achievements to our spreadsheet. I counted Maybe Someday as fitting the reject prompt "A fiction or nonfiction book where music plays a part in the story". Let me know if that's off. Thanks!

message 33: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Hi Laura,

At the end of day 2, we've completed tasks 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 16 and 21.

Also, will you please copy our spreadsheet link into the top post?

Thanks!

message 34: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
The board has been updated and the spreadsheet link is at the bottom of the first post :)

message 35: by Edie (last edited Dec 24, 2018 08:33AM) (new)

Edie | 1145 comments I think the title for 1,2,7,8 is (view spoiler)

message 36: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1145 comments Mindy, I think for the math to work on the spreadsheet, you have to use whole numbers. It might work with decimals, like 3.75 but it can't total entries with hours and minutes as part of the cell. Also there is a limit of 5 hours per person for #14 and 9 hours for #15.

message 37: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 424 comments I've read a few shorter stories over the past two days, and have some others already selected and ready to go while I'm on my (first) holiday trip. Once I get home tomorrow I'll go through and start selecting things specifically to fill out spots.

message 38: by redatt (new)

redatt (mini_sagas) | 66 comments So the books so far are (view spoiler)

message 39: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Edie, thanks, I've corrected the fields. I guess it's obvious who's new to this.

Mini -- I like it! Should we wait to reveal more squares to make a guess? Not sure how that part works.

Mindy

message 40: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Has anyone tried today's game, Hidden Books? Seems like a toughie.

message 41: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1145 comments I tried Hidden Books... and actually got one.

message 42: by Edie (new)

Wow, great work figuring these out. Yeah Team 1

I don't know how that part works either. Is there a penalty for wrong guesses?

In the past there hasn't been a penalty for wrong guesses... the team keeps identifying titles until they get them all right. The Moderator weighs in and lets the team know when they are correct, leaving the spoilers in place so those who want to figure it out can do so.

message 46: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) We've completed 2 more tasks, #19 and #22.

I won't be around tomorrow so I'll wish everyone who celebrates it a Merry Christmas. I'll be back and rarin to go Wednesday.

message 47: by Diana (new)

Diana (dianapharah) | 49 comments I’m about to go on vacation, but I’ll be reading Man’s Search for Meaning which works for the nonfiction prompt/blue cover prompt and A Man Called Ove for the different country setting.

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Merry Christmas everyone! The board has been updated :)

message 49: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 424 comments If 2 hasn't been completed yet, I finished The Arctic Incident which has ice on it.
