Over at https://thereadersroom.org/ and on Litsy we will be continuing our read around the world project. I have randomised the countries we will be visiting in 2019 and the schedule is below.

Please can you list any 1001 books you think are suitable for the following countries and maybe we can get some group reads going.

January - Haiti
February- Macedonia
March - South Sudan
April - Lithuania
May - Oman
June - Swaziland
July - Lebanon
August - Cyprus
September - Malawi
October - Germany
November - South Africa
December - Togo

Gail (gailifer) | 2179 comments This is great. I will join in.
Under the summer traveling challenge of 2018, someone posted a link to all the 1001 books under their country of origin. However, those files have been archived and now I can not find it. Can anyone post again? Thank you

Germany
Billiards at Half-Past Nine by Heinrich Böll or
The Blindness of the Heart by Julia Franck or
Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse or
Jacob the Liar by Jurek Becker

Gail (gailifer) | 2179 comments Anyone have any ideas about books by an author from or about Macedonia?

Gail, I don't know of any 1001 books, but here are a couple of lists I created for Macedonia:

https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Of these, I have read The Bandit Wind: Poems, Cousins, Contemporary Macedonian Poetry, and The Legend of Kalesh Andja. I plan to read A Spare Life this year.

Gail (gailifer) | 2179 comments If I can find it, I think I will read A Spare Life with you. It sounds really good.
Thank you so much Diane.

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) There is nothing listed for August's choice Cyprus

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments This whole idea is really cool: I set up my own spreadsheet for each country, and filled it in with TBR list books to help cover it.

I'm pretty determined to finish this list first, but I might formally jump on this one when I'm done/do a little in parallel where there is overlap.

I only have 125 countries left right now (have read 70), with 25 unread list books on there too. So, with 100 left, I think I could do this one within a year when I get to it.

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) Is Malawi in Africa? Nothing listed for it either.
What do we do in that case?

message 15: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2179 comments Yes MaryAnn I could find nothing either. Non-1001 books are the children's book: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and a book by Theroux titled The Lower River. Anyone else come up with something?

Connie D | 91 comments What a fun idea -- I just discovered it. Are we doing Germany in October 2019 (Gunter Grass Cat and Mouse fits) and if so is the discussion here?
