Lorna (rogue_librarian) I don't see the right thread for this book question, so I'll toss it out here. What does the group say about the Harry Potter series as Scottish reads? Rowling isn't Scottish, but she lived in Edinburgh while writing the series. Hogwarts school in the Highlands is the setting for a large part of most of the stories, but it doesn't really connect in any way with real life Scotland. Would you count them?

I read Potter in 2015(yup, was living under a rock before hand) and included them as Scottish reads. :) For me, either of the factors you mention count ie writing location (ok abit iffy) and story location (perhaps a stronger factor).

Hm... I've wondered about this. I think they do count, for the reasons you've described. I just googled Rowling and see she's described as an 'Honorary Scot' so that's something :)

Yes! :)

Lorna (rogue_librarian) Thanks, Ellen and Kirk. I read each book when it was originally published (more than 20 years ago now for the early ones!) but am rereading the series this year. I think I will include them.

Has any one else read this? I started it in the middle of last year and found it tough going, so shelved it until now, and this time I'm completely immersed in it. What are your thoughts?

Mrs. C. | 5 comments I've heard that Rowling sat in an upstairs cafe overlooking Greyfriars Cemetery to get "atmosphere" for her books. To me, that qualifies it as at least a bit Scottish.
