I don't know if you've seen the mini-series, but now that you've read Lonesome Dove, watch the movie. Give it a year or so, but do watch it. There's a scene- the point where we are introduced to Clara Allan- that is beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I've always noticed how beautiful the very unconventionally beautiful Anjelica Huston was at the time of the filming. Apparently this is a reflection on her personal life at the time. The first time she appears on screen, she radiates beauty and happiness, which makes the scene powerfully heartbreaking because of all that comes after.
If you choose to re-read Lonesome Dove in about ten years or so, prepare to have your heart ripped out about 700 pages in, because you are now reading of Gus's happy reunion with Clara, knowing of all that is to come. I had to put the book down for a couple of days at that point on my second reading. :)
