Koren (koren56) | 1603 comments I play Words With Friends on Facebook with a women that used to be my boss many years ago and I have known most of my life. Yesterday I was looking online at the local Funeral Home site for an obit of a man that his wife was a friend of mine and she had passed away 18 years ago. Now he has died. His last name is Weir. When looking up his obit I saw that my former boss's husband had passed away. Next time I played Words With Friends with my old boss I told her I didnt know her husband had died until I looked up the obit for Mr. Weir. Then I looked at my letters for the game and saw I was able to make the word 'weir' on a double letter score. I forget what it means but it has to do with water.

Fishface | 18892 comments Yesterday when I was posting TC anniversaries and added Darrell Night's name, it got Chris Cornell's song "I Am The Highway" playing in my head because it has the line "I am the night." When I got in my car to go home and turned the key in the ignition an hour later, that was the song playing on the radio...

Koren (koren56) | 1603 comments Tonight I was reading The Most They Ever Had by Rick Bragg. On page 76 he is talking about a guy that witnessed the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger and I remembered I had heard on the radio this morning that today is the 30th anniversary of the Challenger disaster.

Fishface | 18892 comments I just finished reading Rat Scabies and the Holy Grail: Can a Punk Rock Legend Find What Monty Python Couldn't?, about Rat Scabies's Grail quest in France, and last night I watched THE FISHER KING for the first time in years. I had completely forgotten that the movie included the quest for the Grail.

Fishface | 18892 comments Here's another. I was just on Pinterest and came across a video of aruanas mating in a fish tank. Then I went to the post office to get my mail and one of the packages was a book about aruanas, The Dragon Behind the Glass: A True Story of Power, Obsession, and the World's Most Coveted Fish.

Caitlin (cmmcgee_writer92) | 210 comments We were in a small family restaurant getting some lunch before running to the store and dad asked what we needed. I told him I wanted to look for some of those Pure Z, ZQuil gummies, and within a second or two of me getting done explaining to him what they are, an ad for the gummies came on on the station that was playing in the restaurant...

message 64: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18892 comments Clearly the universe wanted you to have those gummies as well.

Koren (koren56) | 1603 comments Our library is having a winter reading challenge. One of the challenges is to read a romance book, which if you know me, you know I hate romance but this one wasn't too bad. I used to be a fan of Dorothea Benton Frank before I decided I hated romance. Anyway, one of the characters is getting a divorce and the main character, her lawyer, had a private detective go into her husbands house and take his computer and copy the hard drive. Now I want to throw the book across the room because we all know you cant do that without a search warrant! What the heck!

Fishface | 18892 comments Right after I posted the anniversary of Lana Clarkson's death for 2019, I started Googling for books about the Papin sisters -- their crime was committed on the same day, 2/3 -- and I found a book written by Hannah Clarkson.

Exactly why I cordially dislike crime fiction. It's full of glaring mistakes.

Koren (koren56) | 1603 comments Seems a bit of a coincidence that a little over a month ago I read a book called The Library Book by Susan Orleans about a fire that destroyed The Los Angeles library and today I found out our small town library was destroyed by a water pipe break in the apartment above. Not on the same scale but still heartbreaking.

Good idea! I will ask my friend if that is a possibility. The head of all the libraries in our county is very fussy about what she will accept. I know that she will not take any books that are more than 10 years old.

Fishface | 18892 comments I spent a long time this afternoon on the crime anniversary of Donald Chesney, true name Merrett or Merritt, who killed his wife and her mother. I couldn't find a photo I liked and then suddenly there were too many to choose from. And then I found a new book on him, and so forth.

So I got home, looked at the news feed on my phone just now, and there was a story about a guy named Merritt who just like Donald was a professional con man and weasel...who's now on the run because he killed his mother.

Fishface | 18892 comments I was vexed with myself for forgetting to add "Valentine Sally" to the TC anniversaries on 2/14. After I went back and added her, I turned to the task of looking up the death dates of the victims of one of the cases in Romanian Serial Killers: The Punisher. Well, sir, the very first person I looked up was also killed on Valentine's Day.

Fishface | 18892 comments I spent a big chunk of Sunday looking online for an old stop-motion Levi's jeans commercial, without success. What I didn't realize until someone told me on Tuesday was that my co-worker finally had her baby that day.

Turns out they named him Levi.

Fishface | 18892 comments I held out until I finished 2 other books before Kindling and starting to read the updated Reasonable Doubt. One of the few things I remembered about it was that the outcome of the case hinged on the family's visit to Chuck E. Cheese and what happened to the leftover pizza. It crossed my mind to wonder whether the restaurant chain still existed because you never hear about it anymore. So I'm re-reading this book after 20-some years and I keep hearing about this Chuck E. Cheese scandal on the radio news. The scandal is about what happens to the leftover pizza.

So here is a scary coincidence. I saw a meme about Christopher Paul Hasson, the white terrorist who had a hit list of Democrats and journalists, it said that he was inspired by Anders Breivik. I am currently reading a book about Anders Breivik.

Here's the link to the article about said terrorist.

Fishface | 18892 comments Yesterday I followed up with a client by recommending 2 books to her about OJ Simpson's case. One was The Run of His Life : The People versus O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin.

Well, today I was dialling thru the radio stations in the car to find some music and heard an announcer say "Jeffrey Toobin." I guess he has a new book out.

Trained to kill. Has white supremacist ideas in his head. Thinks Anders Breivik is cool. AND he's on steroids?

Fishface | 18892 comments It just happened again. I was driving to the office after a session and I heard "London Calling" and "I'm A Rebel Just For Kicks" only 2 or 3 songs apart. I'm starting to feel as if the ghost of Joe Strummer were trying to tell me something.

Fishface | 18892 comments I was a little ways into Mrs. Sherlock Holmes when a flip through the pages revealed that there was a photo section. There are several shots of the title character, and one of them bears an uncommon resemblance to the mom in a new family on my caseload. Fashions have sure changed but the face is almost identical.

Fishface | 18892 comments As I posted a news story here about a drug dealer named Detrick McGowan, it dawned on me that this week is the anniversary of the murder of Kayla Rolland by 1st-grader Dedrick Owen. Not a name you see that often...

Koren (koren56) | 1603 comments Another 'what are the odds'. This morning I was watching an old Matchgame show on game show network. I still love that show. Anyway, I'm reading Audition: A Memoir by Barbara Walters during the commercials. The contestant had to fill in the blank to 'Tommy _______. The top answer was Tommy Dorsey. When I returned to my book, the fifth sentence I read said "We were playing Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey records..."

Fishface | 18892 comments I took a break last night from reading The Murder of Bob Crane to see some "New Rules" segments on my phone. In one of them, Bill Maher drew a parallel between what 45 is doing with his presidency and a kids' movie I never heard of, called GUS, about a mule who kicks field goals for a football team because nobody ever thought to formally make a rule that football players need to be human.

Well, I picked up The Murder of Bob Crane again this morning and within a few pages discovered that Bob Crane appeared in GUS.

Fishface | 18892 comments For 2 or 3 days I have had a guy from my high-school graduating class, a guy named Stalker, popping up in my mind. Couldn't shake him loose. Then last night while reading Wolf Man: The True Story of Francisco Arce Montes - The First Global Serial Killer, a famous British detective weighed in on a murder that occurred in France. His name is Stalker.

Fishface | 18892 comments Today at work so many systems were down -- we couldn't get any Net connections and only some of the phones worked -- that I jokingly asked a friend via text whether Mothra mistook another midwestern power plant for a bug zapper the way she did in 2003. He texted back, "That's so weird that you should text that. I was just reading the Mothra capsule review in the Videohound movie guide."

Fishface | 18892 comments I'm still reading The Mutilators: From the Files of True Detective Magazine and adding death dates to my anniversary book. And for the second time today I added the name of a teenager from Michigan to July 11th. Both of them supposedly ran away from home, or at least that's the story of why they were missing.

message 99: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18892 comments Before getting on the treadmill and turning IT LIVES AGAIN back on, I decided to read another chapter of The Mutilators: From the Files of True Detective Magazine. Not only was it quite a good chapter, but the man disappeared on March 28th, exactly 38 years ago today.

message 100: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18892 comments This one seems pretty unlikely. We were just joking about whether Stephen King had any other pen names besides Richard Bachman, and someone suggested he was also Dan Brown. So that conversation ended, I went to bed and opened up The Mutilators: From the Files of True Detective Magazine, and the next chapter identified a suspect in a murder case: Socrates Ladner, who used the alias Dan Brown.
