Araych | 678 comments After the End of the WorldAfter the End of the World (Carter & Lovecraft, #2) by Jonathan L. Howard by Jonathan L. Howard

This is Carter & Lovecraft #2, strongly recommend reading volumes in order. Probably two-thirds sci-fi/fantasy and one-third spy/mystery. Dan Carter is the descendant of John Carter, who went to Mars. Emily Lovecraft is the descendant of H. P. Lovecraft. In this story they are stuck in an alternate reality in which Germany won WW II. Very well done, lots of fun being in a different reality. 4 stars, 5 stars for C & L #1.

Deb Jones (feisty56) | 99 comments Read the first book in author Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' Inspector Bill Slider police procedural/mystery series, Orchestrated Death. I found it well-written and engaging, as much the secondary storyline of the inspector's inner-personal turmoil as the investigation itself.

Raymond Chandler's 'Philip Marlowe' series was continued after his death, and this addition to the oeuvre by Benjamin Black is pretty good.

Fascinating mystery set in Hong Kong in 1997, just prior to England ceding Hong Kong to China. Great stuff, I highly recommend anything Burdett writes.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments The Cat Who Robbed a Bank The Cat Who Robbed a Bank (Cat Who... #22) by Lilian Jackson Braun by Lilian Jackson Braun

At first the 'Cat Who' books were REAL mysteries but - somewhere along the line - they became stories about a colorful community where murders happens to occur. In this 22nd book in the series, a jewelry dealer is killed and journalist Jim Qwilleran becomes interested in the case. The best part of these stories is Qwilleran's psychic cat Koko....who can sniff out a crime and provide clues to the perp. 😊❤🍒

The book can be read as a standalone.

Zoe Radley | 558 comments Sorry to say it got boring... just the usual cliche of everything is bad blah blah blah and yeah I get it the death or murder of someone close to you will seriously affect you but.... seriously this girl is sooo paranoid about everything and not even trusting her own Fiancè umm I just can’t believe her it’s almost as if the author wanted you to feel that she’s psychotic which I think she should have been also the ending god I really didn’t care I skipped to the end... bland soo bland.

After Ig Perrish experiences tragedy and trauma in his life, he grows a pair of horns that give him unusual abilities.

The author follows in the footsteps of his father, Stephen King, in this dark paranormal book. Interesting but slow-moving story. 3 stars
