Currently Reading? Just Finished? 2019

Sharon, you have expressed my sentiments exactly about the last two Longmire books. I, too, loved all the previous books. Surprisingly, his latest book was on a "best of 2018" list I saw recently.

Yes, feels like friends I knew had died. None of the regular Longmire series characters made more than a token appearance in this book and his new Mexican characters were identified more by their ethnicity/eccentricity/disabilities than actual characterization.

In this story, a fire on luxury cruise ship is the trigger for terrible, frightening consequences. Good horror story. 3.5 stars

Jim wrote: "Just finished TRIBE by James Bruno. Written in 1911, it's as timely today as it was then. And it's written by a guy who's been there done that.

Um... did you make a mistake with the year? For just one thing, there was no CIA in 1911. Did you mean 2011?

Combination of suspense, thriller, political & family drama.

Izza, I have never seen the TV series, but I am hooked on the books!

Then to contemporary Queensland and a prize-winning debut novel The Yellow House by talented young Aussie author Emily O'Grady. She's one to watch.

In this Scandinavian noir, an escaped prisoner is trying to get back to her child while other people are also after the little girl. Complicated story. 3 stars

I read Black Skies by the author, which I liked pretty well.

In this 12th book in the 'Sheriff Joanna Brady' series, the law enforcement officer has to deal with two big cases while she's nine months pregnant. The novel can be read as a standalone, but familiarity with the characters and story arc is a plus. Good mystery. 3 stars

Oh, that is a shame. It's the ending of Murder in the Orient Express that gives the book its power and meaning.

I gave them both 4 stars. I loved the way Sister is written and The 7,5 Deaths of Evelyn Harcastle felt like a Agatha Christie combined with Groundhog Day. Good!

In this addition to the popular series, Hannah Swensen - baker/amateur sleuth - is getting married......but not until a murder is solved. The book includes plenty of recipes, mostly for cookies. The story has more eating than sleuthing, but's it's entertaining. 3 stars

I finished reading the book last night. I knew who the killer was but didn't know what Poirot was going to do. It ended and I turned pages looking for the actual ending :) I liked the ending, though. I don't think any spoilers here.

by Megan Abbott
Abbott is a talented writer, but the characters in this book were frustratingly one-dimensional. My review:

Picked it up on a whim but really happy I did, a very enjoyable thriller with great pacing and characters!

In this addition to the 'Meg Langslow' series, the multitasking amateur detective looks into shenanigans at the fair. Fun cozy mystery. 3 stars

That's sad to hear Sharon. The series has such good characters. 😒
