I finished this last night and had mixed feelings. The language was a struggle for me although it was very authentic. Here's an example of a sentence, "Ah wisny ready. Hav anither go."

It's also very much of its time so it was uncomfortable to read homosexuals referred to as poofs over and over again. Over all, it was a very layered story.

Is it just me or this book is really a hint to the TV show The Peaky Blinders?

I found the crime to be the most sadistic thing I can recall in fiction, but also the story itself to be compelling. Did you enjoy any of the tale?

If he hadn't been so graphic, I would have loved the whole thing. So, yes, I enjoyed it all very much except for the too out-there violence. The story itself and the way it was structured was great.

This true crime book is about a horrific incident that occurred in Kansas in 1995, when a house-fire resulted in the death of two children and a dog. Worst of all, the fire was deliberately started by the kids' mother. Compelling story. 3 stars

Poke Rafferty #4, reveals Rose's history and involves Poke, Rose and the family (and others) in a life-or-death struggle with one of her former lovers. These Poke Rafferty novels are wonderful thrillers, full of love and suspense and beautifully written. 5 stars.

Thanks for the review, Barbara. Karin Fossum is one of my favorite Nordic Noir authors, but I haven't read this one. It sounds very dark indeed - even for her. I'd recommend The Whisperer or The Indian Bride for your next book by Fossum.
