Gretchen | 0 comments After taking a couple of months off of committed reading, I think I am ready to get back into it. I am halfway through with Sandford's Holy Ghost (Virgil Flowers).

Has anyone read L.A. Confidential? Loved the movie. I just sort of started the book. I want to be engaged with it. Any comments? Thanks.

Welcome back to committed reading, Gretchen. I've not read L.A. Confidential, but like you, I enjoyed the movie. Thanks for bringing the book to my attention and as an addition to my TBR list.

In this 2nd book in the 'DI Daniel Hawthorne' mystery series, the Sherlockian consulting detective - and his sidekick Anthony Horowitz - investigate the murder of a lawyer. The book can be read as a standalone.

Very entertaining mystery. 3.5 stars

I have got the noir version edited by the same guy (Otto Penzler), so let me know how the collection holds up."

I'll definitely post a review when I'm finished, but I've read the last two in this annual series and I liked them both a lot. In general, any anthology Penzler edits is pretty good, or at least the ones I've read are.

Finished Murder in the Crooked House, by Soji Shimada, who also wrote The Tokyo Zodiac Murders. I guessed four points of the mystery, but couldn't link them together.

This one is much more user friendly than the Tokyo Zodiac Murders, but without as cool of a solution. I'm being very lazy today so I'll post about it soon.

Ian McEwan is certainly a versatile writer.

In this book, a London man buys a human-like robot called Adam, and - with his girlfriend - programs the android's personality. Adam has kind of a mind of his own though.....and consequences ensue.
Interesting speculative science fiction. 3 stars

Garth Carson, a taxidermist in New York, gets caught up in a very complicated murder/world domination plot. Very witty, with lots of characters and moving parts. I liked the humor and several of the characters, like Garth and Otto, but I kept losing track of who was who.

Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee
by Casey Cep

I really enjoyed this book; it’s actually two books in one. The first part is the story of Reverend Maxwell, and the second part belonged to Harper Lee. This section wound up truly being “the last trial” of Harper Lee; her life was not all that easy.
