In this 8th book in the 'Dead-End Job Mystery' series, Helen Hawthorne is working in a beauty shop....and has to clear her boss of a murder charge. The book can be read as a standalone. Fun cozy mystery. 3 stars

Me too, Barbara. I'm winding down the series but there is still a couple of books in the Complaints series to try as well.

Finished The Lyttleton Case: A Detective Story Club Classic Crime Novel and I'm done with 1922. I was going to read Whose Body?to inaugurate 1923, but I'll wait in case it gets chosen in the poll and read a less-familiar novel written that year by Patricia Wentworth called The Astonishing Adventure of Jane Smith

Jannelies (living between hope and fear) | 512 comments I have been away on holiday so I'm waaayyy behind with my reviews, but so far I've read since 21 June:

Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (Shopaholic, #2) by Sophie Kinsella
Shopaholic Ties the Knot (Shopaholic, #3) by Sophie Kinsella
Six Months to Kill by Enzo Bartoli
The Lying Room by Nicci French
The Woman in the Woods (Charlie Parker, #16) by John Connolly
Asylum by Jack Adams

Which may not be a lot of books, but I wasn't on a holiday to read, but to do other things ;-)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9980 comments NYPD Red 2 NYPD Red 2 (NYPD Red, #2) by James Patterson by James Patterson

In this 2nd book in the 'NYPD Red' series, the elite police unit is chasing the Hazmat Killer. The book can be read as a standalone. Very good thriller. 3.5 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9980 comments Who Let the Dog Out? Who Let the Dog Out? (Andy Carpenter, #13) by David Rosenfelt by David Rosenfelt

In this 13th book in the 'Andy Carpenter' series, the defense lawyer's client may have been framed by mobsters. The comedic mystery can be read as a standalone.

It's always fun to visit with Andy and his cohorts but this book has too many characters and a plot that's overly complex. 3 stars

Araych | 678 comments King Maybe King Maybe (Junior Bender, #5) by Timothy Hallinan by Timothy Hallinan

Junior Bender #5, can be read as a stand-alone but many of the secondary characters recur so I recommend reading series in order.

This effort might be Hallinan's best. Junior gets involved with a powerful movie mogul and things get very scary. Great intricate and interesting plot, wonderful funny, quirky characters, and Hallinan's smooth and immersive style. It's a humorous mystery but one scene actually made me cry. I don't mean cloudy, I mean real tears. And included are several useful tips if the reader wants to take up home burglary. 5 stars.

Butch Karp #6, takes place in 1977. Butch takes a job reviewing the Warren Commission report on the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Different setting than the usual adventures of Butch and Marlene and maybe a bit slower, but very well done. And we get to meet Sweetie.
