The New Iberia Blues by James Lee Burke

In this addition to the popular series, Detective Dave Robicheaux is pursuing a vicious serial killer in southern Louisiana. The book can be read as a standalone. Good mystery but Dave is too morose and introspective (the sleuth is getting on in years). 😘 3.5 stars

I completely agree with your characterization of Dave. I found myself skimming over that and some of the description of the essence of the colors, etc.

I'm starting Tank of Serpents by James Leasor.

4* for The Birdwatcher. I really enjoyed this police procedural, good character development and no loose threads at the end.

Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny

In this addition to the series, Chief Inspector Gamache becomes executor of a will and investigates a murder. The book can be read as a standalone, but knowing the characters is a bonus. Good mystery. 3.5 stars

Finished the Quiet American. Listened as an audiobook and followed along with my physical book. Had a hard time following the back and forth in timeline and then got completely lost toward the end. Guess I am going to have to re-read the last couple of chapters.

I am continuing on with the Pillars of the Earth.

Just finished Broken Ground by Val McDermid, will be starting The Headmaster's Wife by Jane Haddam.

Finished Carnal Hours by Max Allen Collins

Nathan Heller investigates a famous real-life murder (which I had never heard of) in Nassau during WW II. For those not familiar with the Heller series, the crime is real but the book is fiction.

I love the way this guy writes but this is not his best work.

Lots is going on in Grizzly Falls, Montana and detective partners Alvarez and Piscoli get caught up in a murder investigation while Piscoli plans her wedding. Pretty good mystery. 3 stars

Just finished Past Tense by Lee Child

I'm a big fan of the Reacher series but I feel this is by far the weakest entry. The first half or two-thirds of the book is only half Reacher and half a young couple (Patty and Shorty) who, we know, are headed for big trouble. But I don't care about Patty and Shorty--they're victims. I read these books to see Reacher kick ass and then kick ass again. So I was disappointed in this entry in the series.

A Better World by Marcus Sakey

In this 2nd book in the science-fiction 'Brilliance' trilogy, the hostility between regular people and people with extraordinary abilities (called brilliants) heats up. Good story with interesting characters. 3.5 stars
