Deb Jones (feisty56) | 99 comments Finished Confessions of an Innocent Man by David R. Dow by David R. Dow. Wow, what a story! The author is a professor of law and founder of the Texas Innocence Project. In this fictional story, the reader -- and the protagonist -- learn what can drive a good man to do evil -- or is it evil? Thought-provoking and an emotional ride.

Finished Whose Body? ahead of the group read. I haven't posted about it yet, and there will be no spoilers, but as much as I enjoyed it, I realized just how not quite developed Wimsey is here compared to what he will be in the other books; normal for a first in series.

Last night I started The Black Jersey, by Jorge Zepeda Patterson. I'm not too deep into it yet, but so far it's okay -- the main character/narrator has an interesting backstory.

I'll be reading the first book in that series, The Penguin Pool Murder (1931), hopefully before the year's out.

Nils Shapiro # 2. Can be read as a stand-alone. As far as I can tell, this is only Goldman's second book, in which case he is an amazingly talented writer. This is a wonderful book, with great characters and dialogue and a fascinating plot. 5 stars, highly recommended.

I stumbled upon Christopher Pike's Sati some time back and loved it. Be warned however that it is not a thriller nor a mystery.

I also read Night recently and then read another that you would all appreciate, Witness: Lessons from Elie Wiesel’s Classroom by Ariel Burger, who was one of his students, then his assistant, and eventually Wiesel's very close friend and confidante.

It's easy reading, but will really make you think. It's well worth getting a copy. I reviewed it here, if you're interested. I did my best to include some quotes and examples of the questions Wiesel says we should ask ourselves.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments On a completely different reading path from the above, it was a treat to re-read One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson. I liked it even better than before. First published in 2007, it was re-released along with the rest of the Jackson Brodie series to get us warmed up for #5.

In 1974 Atlanta, a cop killer is on the loose, and - though they're disdained by their male colleagues - some women cops go after the perp. Good story. 4 stars

Coincidentally I saw a 1960s movie a week ago The Pawnbroker with a brilliant gut-wrenching performance from Rod Steiger, about the constant pain and trauma that holocaust survivors carry with them. It is the possibly the bleakest mainstream American movie I have seen, so maybe it will be interesting to you after reading Night.

Check your brain at the door and you will probably enjoy this fast paced professionally written mystery thriller. Rating - 3/5.

I haven't started reading this series yet, but between your comments here and the reviews I read on the book's page, I'm definitely moving it to the top of my list.

Lu, I'm just posting my review now, and while it could be read as a standalone for the plot, I don't think it would be as good without knowing the people. It's not just a plot-driven story.
