Ex-football player turned sportswriter gets pulled into murder mystery by his beautiful ex-girlfriend. Never really grabbed me for some reason--nothing wrong with it, just never took off.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Romanov Prophecy sits firmly in the thriller subgenre dominated by The Da Vinci Code , but without (most of) the metaphysics and with a more relatable protagonist. It's got first-novel problems that it paves over with a sprinting narrative and great dollops of tragi-history surrounding one of the world's favorite conspiracy theories. Fun? Sure. You won't come out with a net loss of neurons. Take it for what it is (a good distraction from sitting in coach on a transatlantic flight) and you'll have at least a three-star good time.

currently into The Girl Without Skin, by Mads Peder Nordbo. It's been a while since I've read a Scandinavian crime novel but this one is set in Greenland so it's a bit different. I am having trouble focusing on anything at the moment -- with a hurricane on the way, my mind is otherwise occupied.

In this standalone, NYPD detective Kat Donavan learns new information about her dad's murder and investigates shenanigans involving an online dating site.

Thanks, Thomas -- the book is fine so far, but my brain is not there. I'm getting us ready for this hurricane that looks like it might make landfall just north of us at this point. But who knows.

Thomas (tom471) | 2006 comments I read Celibacy, a Love Story: Memoir of a Catholic Priest's Daughter by Mimi Bull
It is not a mystery, but an emotionally wrenching story of a woman discovering her past. Her father was a Catholic priest. Her mother, who "adopted" her, told Mimi the truth when Mimi was 35. Not until her mother died did she learn who her father was.
My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
It was a LibraryThing giveaway.

Aditya | 2017 comments Finished Blood Test by Jonathan Kellerman. I give an author two books before I discard him for good and this was Kellerman's last chance. Run of the mill cliched thriller, might have enjoyed them more a decade ago. Rating - 2/5

I used to read Kellerman a lot but then I had the misfortune of meeting him at a Tony Hillerman Book Festival years ago. He was an ass and he was a big ass to my 80 year old mother. I never read him again.

In this 8th book in the 'Anna Travis' series, the DCI investigates murders perpetrated by a serial killer. The book, essentially a police procedural, can be read as a standalone.

The criminal is hygienically challenged but clever. 😣

I learned a lot of life lesson from this book. About Karma, about hard work, about having hope, about kindness, and a lot more.
I kinda scared of getting old after read this book.

If you're willing to give Tey another try, I recently read The Man in the Queue, the first of her Inspector Alan Grant series and thoroughly enjoyed it. (No royals in this one)
