A superb, gut wrenching read.

two from 1919 (still haven't found time to post about them)
The Mystery of the Skeleton Key, by Bernard Capes and Ashes to Ashes, by Isabel Ostrander. The second one is sort of an inverted mystery where we learn the identity of the murderer right away, but what's interesting is what he does to stay on top of his lies and his situation as paranoia sets in. Well done, especially given it's from 1919.
Also Go, Lovely Rose / The Evil Wish, by Jean Potts, sent to me by Stark House Press (I love these guys). Two novels (one from the 50s and one from the 60s) that lean way more toward the psychological side of things; and yippee skippy I've found another unknown woman crime writer.

This is the first book by this author I've read. Foggy Moscowitz is a fish out of water--an ex-New York hood relocated in Florida, working for Children's Welfare..
I really enjoyed the story--well written, an easy read with some humor and interesting bits on Indian life. I'm going to read more from Mr. DePoy and this one is highly recommended.

A Season of Knives by P.F. Chisholm is the second time we meet swashbuckling Sir Robert Carey on the Scottish border in Elizabethan England. Love it!

In this continuation of Agatha Christie's 'Hercule Poiort' series, the great detective uses his little grey cells to solve three murders.
Christie set a very high bar and Sophie Hannah doesn't quite reach it, but readers who miss Poirot might enjoy the book.

In this addition to the series, Dismas Hardy's long time secretary is arrested for being an accessory to murder. Hardy's anger starts a cat and mouse game between Hardy and the new District Attorney. An average mystery for me. 3 stars

This is entry 5 of the Henry Kennis series, who is the top cop on Nantucket island. Series and author are new to me. I first thought the book was kind of an American cozy but it got a bit harder edged and more interesting as we went along. I ended up liking it a lot and will read more from Mr. Axelrod.

I've liked some of the Gervase Fen mysteries more than others but he's an interesting character. I haven't read Holy Disorders yet.

Ethan Ford is a perfect husband, father, and town leader NOW.....but his past as a rapist and murderer has just caught up with him. Hoffman explores the reactions of the his family and the townsfolk. Interesting premise but some parts of the story stretch credulity. 3 stars

I will be reading this book sometimes in February!

It's a fantastic TV series as well.. The books are fun and so is the show.. Essie Davis makes a perfect Phryne Fisher.

Did you enjoy feeling manipulated? Did you think it was clever, or cheap?

Started Boar Island (Barr) a while ago and just could not get into it. So, I checked out the audiobook and am reading along with it with my eBook. :)

In this first book in the Jade de Jong series the private detective helps the Johannesburg police investigate a brutal killing. Pretty good mystery. 3 stars

No did not enjoy feeling manipulated. Not cheap, nor clever, but perhaps it was just an example of the human condition that we are not all good or all bad. It was unexpected with how the story was unfolding. So a twist, which is usually good, but it left a bad taste in my mouth about one of the characters.

I liked it! I've already started #3,

Not recommended. The hero is an unlikable fool and the plot has so many holes that even I noticed.

I cannot stand the main character Kennedy, but from previous novels of hers all of which I’ve enjoyed I’ll stick with it.
The book in general is excellent.

In this addition to the 'Wind River Reservation' series, attorney Vicky Holden is suspected of killing her abusive ex-husband. The book can be read as a standalone. Good light mystery. 3 stars

I enjoyed Fiona Barton's two previous novels, especially The Child (I should have seen the ending coming, but I didn't). After reading your review, I can hardly wait to start The Suspect.
