Roland Ford, an ex-Marine ex-cop P.I. in the San Diego area is hired to find an escaped mental patient. This is a very well written mystery by a true professional. Highly recommended, but be aware, the book contains vivid descriptions of "enhanced interrogation techniques".

I finally made it to The House of The Arrow (1924), a classic of British mystery. The main character is Inspector Hanaud of the Sûreté. I thought Poirot could be annoying but this guy ....

finished The House of The Arrow. Highly satisfying. The movie (1953), not so much. It misses what makes the book so good.

Mortimer (call me Mort) Angel, ex-IRS agent and private-eye-in-training, in Reno. Very well done mystery with humor by an author new to me. I looked him up and I'm happy to report there are more Mortimer Angel books out there waiting for me. Really enjoyed the book, highly recommended.

I stopped reading this at 35%.
I just couldn't stand all of the inner dialogue between the two women. The story was just not moving fast enough for me.

Deb Jones (feisty56) | 99 comments Had read a few "stinkers" there for a bit, but thankfully back to more enjoyable reads.

Finished Knife Knife (Harry Hole, #12) by Jo Nesbø by Jo Nesbø, the 12th book in the Inspector Harry Hole series. I enjoy Nesbo's writing, but I found I've lost patience with the binge-drinking Harry Hole.

Black Out Black Out (Inspector Troy, #1) by John Lawton by John Lawton was an intense and satisfying police procedural that introduced Detective Troy of Scotland Yard during the last year of WWII.

Another book of historical fiction, this time, again in England, but in 1811 is When Gods Die (Sebastian St. Cyr, #2) by C.S. Harris When Gods Die by C.S. Harris. A wonderful mystery with many layers.

message 2128: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 12 comments Finished The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths. I very much enjoyed this archeological detective mystery (?). Ruth and Harry, archeologist and detective respectively, are relatively well developed characters. I look forward to seeing where this series goes from here.
Started A Man Lay Dead by Ngaio Marsh, recommendation from the 1930’s mystery read nominations for October. Although not one chosen the e-book I have found on cloudLibrary is only 146 pages so I should be done sometime tomorrow depending on other activities.
Happy Reading to all 👏😁👏

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 92 comments I am enjoying Promise Not to Tell (Cutler, Sutter, & Salinas #2) by Jayne Ann Krentz Promise Not to Tell. It deals with the survivors of a cult who are convinced that the cult leader is still alive and dangerous.

message 2130: by Graham (new)

Graham Hi all, I have just finished reading the Sleepwalker by Joseph Knox, the third book in the Aidan Waits trilogy. Another great book from Knox and I think one of the most enjoyable crime series I have read sine Peter May's Lewis trilogy. Do we know from the author or media if there is to be a 4th book in the Aidan Waits series? The Sleepwalker by Joseph Knox

In this 4th book in the humorous 'Bailey Ruth' series, the heavenly emissary is sent to Oklahoma to protect a young man. When a murder occurs, two 'ghost detectives' investigate. The book can be read as a standalone.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments The Bone Yard The Bone Yard (Body Farm, #6) by Jefferson Bass by Jefferson Bass

In this 6th book in the 'Body Farm' series, Dr. Brockton - a forensic pathologist - looks into a shotgun death and a reform school scandal. The book can be read as a standalone.

Partly based on the true story of a horrifically abusive reform school in Florida. 3 stars

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. But I haven't totally given up on it. Every now and again I dip into it. Unfoftunately, so far I keep asking myself why I am reading this dreck.

Glad you liked it though.

message 2150: by Patty (new)

Patty | 4468 comments Just finished Goodbye Stranger a debut novel by Miciah Bay Gault. I gave it four stars; waffled between three and four. But she had parts of the poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe, AND Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon woven into the story. So, I thought the four stars was more appropriate.
