I've started two books for some of my annual challenges -
- Death of an Outsider by M.C. Beaton
- The Bone Garden by Kate Ellis

Yah. I am about halfway through. I think it may be a bit long, but good so far.

In this 2nd book (that's been translated into English) in the 'Detective Kaga' series, the Tokyo homicide cop investigates the murder of a woman. Kaga is much like Sherlock Holmes, observing things and making deductions. The book can be read as a standalone.
Unusual mystery. 3.5 stars

In this 4th book in the John Maddens series, the retired police detective helps Scotland Yard track down a serial killer. The book can be read as a standalone.
Good mystery that addresses undiagnosed PTSD resulting from WWI. 3.5 stars

Polish-mostly by the title.

Pretty Guilty Women
by Gina LaManna
A very quick read and entertaining diversion, but not terrifically original.

I was thinking that is a pretty descriptive title. :)

Pretty average thriller, one preposterous thing after the other and the general sense that the twist were trying too hard and in the end it was no surprise. I was bored for various lengths of times along the read and i had a hard time finishing this book as the lecture stretched out for more days than it was necessary due to the lack of interest.

The head of the Civilian Review Board and a New York cop accused of misconduct get caught up in a huge case of fraud and murder. Great idea but the book is only fair. The two protagonists don't really work together until the last few pages and the story goes too slowly and includes way too much detail, partly due the the author's past work with the board.

A big house full of rich people, the old man's dead, Herkie solves another one. No Miss Lemon, no Hastings, no Japp. It's fine, but not one of Aggy's best.

Herkie and Aggy. Okay.

Finished The Life We Bury. Very good book. The audiobook is really good, too. Yes, I listened at work and read at home. :)

I have tried to read The Institute but i find it hard to get hooked into the story just yet. I'm about 15% into the reading and still does not catch my interest. Hoping it gets better...

I haven't started any new books but am currently reading -
- The Bee's Kiss by Barbara Cleverly
- The Bone Garden by Kate Ellis and
- The Last Temptation by Val McDermid

I agree with you, Bill. I much prefer her Hamish Macbeth series to the Agatha Raisin. ❤😍📚

Me too. Agatha gets too silly sometimes about men. 😊💖🌺

Dortmunder #10, OK to read as stand-alone. Another wonderful entry in the saga of John Dortmunder and the gang. I'm not going to try to describe the plot but if you're not familiar with Donald Westlake's humorous mysteries I envy you because you're in for a treat. A real grand-master at work.

I love funny mysteries like these. 😊💖🌷

In this 14th book in the 'Meg Langslow' series, Meg - wife, mother of young twins, blacksmith, and amateur sleuth - is trying to help save her town from predatory lenders when a murder occurs.
The book has the author's usual popular recurring characters and zany humor. 3 stars

"When I finally caught up with Abraham Trahearne, he was drinking beer with an alcoholic bulldog named Fireball Roberts in a ramshackle joint just outside of Sonoma, California, drinking the heart right out of a fine spring afternoon."
Now THAT'S how to open a mystery. This is the first book by Crumley I've read and he's a real talent. Rather distinctive style, takes a few pages to get used to it, but this is a five star novel.

This is the second book in the excellent sci-fi trilogy that starts with The Three-Body Problem.
As The Dark Forest opens a large fleet of hostile Trisolaran aliens is headed for Earth, destined to arrive in 400 years. Presumably this is when the 'Doomsday Battle' will occur between the human race and Trisolarans.
The story describes elaborate maneuvers on both sides. 4 stars
