I've read the Slough House series. Love them. Haven't tried his other books yet.

I'm on page 85 of A House of Ghosts by WC Ryan, and it's taken this long to get the characters all together on a remote island. I'm dying of boredom here. I'm becoming as bad as my spouse who, if there's no murder in the first five minutes of a tv crime show, starts getting antsy.

I’ve heard his other books are good too, Mary. I believe it, because he’s a good writer and his books are not all about rip-tear-kill plot. Good characters@

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments Still a 5-star favourite after a re-read is Kate Atkinson’s fourth Jackson Brodie book, Started Early, Took My Dog. He just can’t help helping to make up for past tragedies when he was too young to help.

Finished A House of Ghosts, by WC Ryan. I think when a book is promoted as "an unrelenting, gripping mystery ," it ought to be. But it wasn't. I wasn't at all gripped, and even figured out a major plot point by like page 29. And you wonder why I prefer the older stuff.

In this 7th book in the 'Bailey Ruth' series, the ghostly amateur sleuth investigates the murder of a lawyer. The book can be read as a standalone.

Amusing cozy mystery. 3 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments Top Secret Twenty-One Top Secret Twenty-One (Stephanie Plum, #21) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich

In this 21st book in the humorous 'Stephanie Plum' series, the bounty hunter is trying to track down a man accused of human trafficking. The book can be read as a standalone.

Has a few laughs but not the best book in the series. 2 stars

Araych | 677 comments The Woman Who Married a bear The Woman Who Married a Bear (Cecil Younger, #1) by John Straley by John Straley

Follows the adventures of a flawed PI in Alaska. Vivid and poetic sense of place, sort of like James Lee Burke in Louisiana. Straley has his own style, you need to concentrate as you read, but worth it. 4 stars.

Do join the group read, it's been pretty silent as of now. Still remains one of my favorite books of all time. Rating - 5/5

Jo Conklin | 1 comments just finished Dying Breath by Heather Graham and enjoyed it a lot! It has strong paranormal and romance elements around a solid suspense arc, and ties everything around the history of Boston to catch the killers. It's part of a larger series but I thought it worked well as a standalone.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments Being Sherlock A Sherlockian's Stroll Through the Best Sherlock Holmes Stories by Ashley D Polasek Being Sherlock: A Sherlockian's Stroll Through the Best Sherlock Holmes Stories by Ashley D Polasek

In this book Ashley Polasek - a recognized expert on Sherlock Holmes - introduces the reader to "the very best the canon has to offer." Polasek shares the stories she loves most, the reasons she adores them, and all kinds of interesting minutiae related to the tales and their screen adaptations.

Entertaining book. Excellent for long-time fans and newbies.

In this 7th book in the 'Kate Burkholder' series, the Police Chief is threatened by a stalker - and her life is seriously endangered - as she tries to solve a murder. The book can be read as a standalone, but familiarity with the series is a plus.

Good book. 4 stars

From 1933, I've finished He Arrived at Dusk, by RC Ashby, an incredibly obscure female author of mysteries. It was SOOOO good!!! An outstanding mystery, actually, with a supernatural tinge.

In this 9th book in the 'Chief Inspector Armand Gamache' series, the detective investigates the death of an elderly quintuplet while continuing to rout out corruption in the Surete de Quebec.

The book can be read as a standalone but knowledge of the background is beneficial.
