In this 2nd book in the 'Intercrime' series, the Swedish detective squad is on the trail of a vicious serial killer. The book can be read as a standalone.

Good mystery. 3 stars

It is actually one of King's most compact works and by his standards an absolute breeze.

I'm probably one of the few who isn't a fan, and I didn't even bother to pick up the other two books in the series. Just not my cuppa.

Aditya | 2017 comments @Nancy You are not alone, I was in a King fan group back then and I remember it seeing a lot of hate. Some old school King fans prefer pretending King never dabbled in the thriller genre. It was a bit cliched so I even understand where you are coming from. For me personally King's storytelling often trumps his stories so it did not bother me.

Genre change doesn't bother me at all -- I haven't liked some of his later horror novels either. I just didn't care for it very much.

Jupiter | 336 comments finished The Big Sleep The Big Sleep (Philip Marlowe, #1) by Raymond Chandler - 3.5-4/5

and also finished Night Film Night Film by Marisha Pessl - 4.5-5/5 rating from my side after having slept on it
if feels so authentic and realistic that i had to keep reminding myself this is fiction and i loved the author's writing style.
i enjoyed very much the journey and following along side with the reporter's investigation and i am not easily spooked but i have to agree that this book managed to give me the hibbie gibbies now and then exactly because it is scary in a non obvious way but the skilled author manages to create just enough of the picture to allow for the reader's imagination to fill in the gaps and that is where the real scary happens.
and that ending.... it was not just one surprise but a succession of them and in the end, it closed in the same mysterious and bone chilling way that it started.
it was a pleasure to read this book!

Great book. For me, the dialogue in the earlier King novels seemed really crisp and authentic. I do not find that in the later books. But then, what do I know- not being an American!

Espresso Tales Espresso Tales (44 Scotland Street, #2) by Alexander McCall Smith
by Alexander McCall Smith

In these lighthearted stories, Alexander McCall Smith recounts the activities of a diverse circle of folks who live in Edinburgh's "New Town" neighborhood. Many of the characters live in apartments at 44 Scotland Street - and others are their friends and acquaintances.

Plenty of smiles - and even a few laugh out loud moments - in this book. Very enjoyable. 3.5 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments Remains of Innocence Remains of Innocence (Joanna Brady, #16) by J.A. Jance by J.A. Jance

In this 16th book in the 'Joanna Brady' series, the sheriff investigates geographically distant crimes that seem to be connected. The book can be read as a standalone, but knowledge of the characters is a plus.

A highlight of the series is the inclusion of Joanna's family, who add a warm-hearted vibe.

Good mystery. 3.5 stars
