Mystical elements in the book are intriguing but the plot doesn't completely come together. 2.5 stars

Still struggling to get through Another Country so started a mystery I bought a while ago, Deadly Pretty Things by Max Thorn. He "Americanized" the language from UK which is unfortunate but it has been a good read so far. I can tell it is going to involve corporate bad behavior which for some reason always makes me anxious. Don't know what is up with that? (Well, yes I do. :) )

The Last Dark Place by Stuart M. Kaminsky

Detective Abe Lieberman ('the rabbi') and his partner Detective Bill Hanrahan ('Father Murphy') deal with killers, gangs and crazies while navigating busy private lives.

Very good mystery. 4 stars

The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver

Colter Shaw roams the country finding missing people for the rewards offered, so he's sort of a detective on commission. Professionally written but I wasn't impressed with the characters--they were never real to me. Not recommended.

History and mystery, a great combination! C.J. Sansom's Shardlake series is terrific, and the third book, Sovereign, finds our favourite hunchbacked lawyer mixed up again in the dangerous power struggles of Henry VIII's England.

I enjoy Crichton novels also and Dead Mountain is fascinating. My book club read it a few years ago. I had never heard of this incident, yet there are 3 books written about it. How did you come to choose it?

@Chris - the Dyatlov story is my favorite creepy story ever. I am slavic and have heard of the story before. There is also a movie but i have been planing to re-read this one as my halloween book as i am not so big on movies and prefer to read.

Just read this..so disappointing. Did anyone read this book??

I just finished The Institute. I liked, as all King's works, for the writing style and the pace he is able to create. But it's not the genre that has made it a great author, not an horror. More a sciFi thriler. :)

This thriller, set in South Africa, involves a sex-trafficking ring run by sadistic criminals. A private detective, hired to be a bodyguard, gets in the middle of the police investigation of the unlawful enterprise.

Complex plot in an interesting setting. 3 stars
