Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments Shadow Play (Eve Duncan, #19) by Iris Johansen Shadow Play by Iris Johansen

In this 19th book in the 'Eve Duncan' series, the forensic sculptor is on the trail of a child killer. The book can be read as a standalone, but familiarity with the characters is a plus.

Mystical elements in the book are intriguing but the plot doesn't completely come together. 2.5 stars

Gretchen | 0 comments Still struggling to get through Another Country so started a mystery I bought a while ago, Deadly Pretty Things by Max Thorn. He "Americanized" the language from UK which is unfortunate but it has been a good read so far. I can tell it is going to involve corporate bad behavior which for some reason always makes me anxious. Don't know what is up with that? (Well, yes I do. :) )

Detective Abe Lieberman ('the rabbi') and his partner Detective Bill Hanrahan ('Father Murphy') deal with killers, gangs and crazies while navigating busy private lives.

Very good mystery. 4 stars

Araych | 677 comments The Never Game The Never Game (Colter Shaw, #1) by Jeffery Deaver by Jeffery Deaver

Colter Shaw roams the country finding missing people for the rewards offered, so he's sort of a detective on commission. Professionally written but I wasn't impressed with the characters--they were never real to me. Not recommended.

In this legal thriller, ace attorney Paul Madriani defends a woman who says she was drugged and set up as a drunk driver who killed someone. What seems to be a simple case turns out to have international threads.

Complicated plot. 3 stars

I enjoy Crichton novels also and Dead Mountain is fascinating. My book club read it a few years ago. I had never heard of this incident, yet there are 3 books written about it. How did you come to choose it?

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 140 comments I just finished The Institute. I liked, as all King's works, for the writing style and the pace he is able to create. But it's not the genre that has made it a great author, not an horror. More a sciFi thriler. :)

This thriller, set in South Africa, involves a sex-trafficking ring run by sadistic criminals. A private detective, hired to be a bodyguard, gets in the middle of the police investigation of the unlawful enterprise.
