Night Flight to Paris by David Gilman

An immersing, satisfying, WW2 SOE adventure in which I cared about the cast of characters. It had good plotting, with an ending I didn’t see coming, and kept me up late, lately, with the bedside lamp on.

I got a wee bit sidetracked as far as mysteries and crime novels and have spent time elsewhere in other genres, but I'm getting back on track again with Inspector French’s Greatest Case by Freeman Wills Crofts (1924). After everything I've been reading, this book seems sort of mundane at the moment. I'll get over it.

In this cozy mystery, a book store owner/amateur sleuth (and her cat) help investigate the killing of a movie director.

Fun story. 3 stars

Araych | 677 comments Dirty Sally Dirty Sally (Dan Reles, #1) by Michael Simon by Michael Simon

Austin, 1988. Dan Reles is the only Jew on the Austin PD. Gets involved in a nasty murder which leads to more murders and corruption in high places. Simon's style reminded me a bit of James Ellroy.

Tone | 1759 comments The Understudy by Sophie Hannah

This book is an unputdownable thriller set in the world of musical theatre, told from the point of view of four very competitive mothers of talented young daughters.

Today I started A Head Full of Ghosts, so far an intriguing book, maybe with a supernatural background, but I'm not sure.

A rebellious teenage girl is convicted of killing her sister, though she insists she's innocent. This book is a sort of combination YA novel and adult drama.

I didn't love the book can I can see its appeal to other readers. 3 stars

I feel I am missing something. Actually, I think the issue for me is the language. It's rhythm. I have this problem with most books written in 1800s to early early 1900s. I have always struggled reading the "classics". But I do persevere. :)

A history professor is murdered and Harry Harristeen and her 'talking pets' investigate. During the story, we get lots of snippets from the past....about British prisoners of war during the American Revolution.

The book is okay, but it seems more like history than mystery. 2 stars

Reminded me of French too though French is undoubtedly the better writer while Harper's plots were more compact than French's.

Chapter 2 of the adventures of the Slow Horses (incompetent spies set aside to do busy-work) from the book of the same name. This is a grade-A spy thriller--funny, smart, and very exciting. Hint--not all the slow horses are completely slow. I enjoyed every page.

In this spinoff from Anne Perry's popular 'Detective Thomas Pitt' series, Pitt's son is all grown up and taking center stage in his own novels.
In this second book in the 'Daniel Pitt' series, set in the early 1900s, Thomas's son Daniel - a fledgling attorney at the London law firm of Marcus fford Croft - defends a man accused of embezzling. The book can be read as a standalone.

Interesting mystery. 3 stars
