This is volume 2 in the adventures of Mortimer (call me Mort) Angel, private eye-in-training. Should not be read as a stand-alone. I'd recommend you start with volume 1, Gumshoe. Very funny, very well-thought-out and well written with a shocking ending I didn't see coming. A dynamite, fun read that I highly recommend.

PattyMacDotComma | 922 comments A Place of Execution is an award-winning (and NOT grisly, in spite of the title) Val McDermid mystery. Young teen girl disappears - always traumatic, gruesome or not.
A Place of Execution by Val McDermid Link to my review

message 2512: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen | 0 comments Finished Blue Moon by Lee Child. More gory violence and shoot 'em up bang bang than his previous books. His books are generally a good read. This one he did not dial in like some of his more recent books. That is good.

Now reading Turning Angel by Greg Iles. Penn Cage #2.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9979 comments Devil's Bridge Devil's Bridge (Alexandra Cooper, #17) by Linda Fairstein by Linda Fairstein

In this addition to the series, ADA Alexandra Cooper mysteriously vanishes, starting a frantic search by her friend (and now boyfriend) Detective Mike Chapman.

The story is standard Linda Fairstein, with tons of NYC history.
Okay mystery. 3 stars

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 140 comments The Legend of Sleepy Hollow The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving . This story wasn't as I expected, not an horror as the movie I've seen. But it's a great example of literature, with wonderful descriptions and subtle humor. Even if short, it's a nice novel.

I agree Chris, but I feel that way about most TV series. They don't wrap it up when they should.

Congratulations Christine!

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I started reading

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Although I tend to think of this book as Science Fiction, which is usually where dystopian fictions get shelved, it actually could be tagged as crime literature as well. The first few chapters are plenty violent - "ultra-violent" I might even say. Not for the faint of heart, and neither is the movie. Although I enjoy Kubrick's films and I don't usually have a problem with cinematic violence, I haven't been able to re-watch A Clockwork Orange in almost 30 years now and I probably never will.
